Screw it out.....no repair needed ;)

As above, take it out.

If it goes flat, get a new tyre.

If it doesn't, drive and enjoy.

If you leave it in and drive around the screw will eventually just get worked in deeper and deeper until it leaks anyway.

As for repairs, no shop would likely touch that since its on the shoulder where it sees a heap of load.
If you REALLY want to repair it I'd plug it and flip the tyre on the wheel so the repair is on the inside where it doesn't get quite as much load.
I'd still not trust it though.

I am another who would repair this myself, and I recommend you do. What is the worst that can happen? It may leak. But out of 8 or 9 repairs I have done myself only one developed a slow leak later on. So what if it is near the shoulder? So what if there is more load there? The tyre won't fail. The plug probably won't fail. Repair repair repair.

Manga got it right- thats the standard approach- it often happens. Leaving it is a really silly idea, As manga said often easily fixed- happened to me a number of times- same situation a screw or nail etc. Incidentally tyres don't always just go flat they leak and a under inflated tyre is dangerous.

Further comment ;)

If tyre leaks when screw removed....buy New tyres

Really not that expensive....it is a sports car... You are going to test it
From time to time....spend a few bucks

Repair....in my opinion....is not an option
IF it is for you....sell the MX5 and buy a Mazda3 and drive it like your grandma

that's not right i.e. just throwing a tyre away because of a nail. Metal in tyres ( screws, nails rivet stems etc is commonplace and you don't just replace tyres unless it is deemed unrepairable . Tyres can be repaired with plugs and a proper adhesive and these days repairers don't as a rule make dodgy repairs. Its also a bit of laugh repairing tyres yourself. Its a dangerous and tough job removing tyres and repairing plugging is best left to someone who has the experience and the equipment. I reckon tyre repairs are still one of the bargains even today- cheap for a cow of a job.

As I said....its my opinion

what's a tyre cost $150?
what's a repair cost $50?

for $100 I'd rather have a new tyre....than Hope they didn't give the job to the apprentice that was still recovering from a big night
These cars don't have real spares.......don't fancy driving Home on the one provided....if the repair fails
or worse....it fails going around a corner and the car understeers into a 4x4 coming the other way or a guard rail

Perhaps that is over dramatising things....perhaps that has a .01% of happening

but

Cheap insurance in my opinion....but we all have different risk profiles...and cost /benefit beliefs

Its not an opinion its just what tyre fitters do daily. I was amazed that people even asked the question.

Is it your opinion that no opinions have been expressed in this thread?

I'd really laugh if it turned out to be a 6mm long self tapper that didn't even go halfway onto the rubber.

I believe the opinion expressed by Manga is that there is no problem having repaired tyres on an MX5

You can also fit old tyres or retreads.....or cheapest Chinese brand you can find

but quality tyres are really a very cheap performance mod and as Rob stated .....New quality tyres do provide a "peace of mind"

There is no problem having a tyre examined by a good specialist tyre shop and repaired if possible. That's what I said. Diagnosis by a single phone cam photo on a forum is crap.

Indeed. And, like I said early on in the thread, I had actually done that -- and they weren't keen on the repair.

In the end I just bought two new tyres. Quite surprised how much the old tyres had worn, compared to the new ones sitting side by side with them, even though the picture makes them look good.

Thanks all.
