Hi All,
First post here. I've done a search but couldn't locate anything current.
I own an MGB thats fitted wth MX5 seats, understand they're from a 89/90 model. The cushoning isn't too bad, but the both have a few small tears in them. I've been told by a couple of trimmers that one should be able to buy a fabric seat cover set for several hundred dollars and they could then sew it together. Unfortunatly I haven't been able to locate such a kit or set. I've found no end of seat covers, but they appear to be large canvas seat covers that just sit over the existing seat, not a new set of fabric that can be sewed to the seat to replace the existing material.
The trimmers I've spoken to have quoted about $700 per seat to actually retrim in new material.
Do you guys have any suggestions regarding these seat cover sets? Or do you know of any trimmers who might be able to do a reasonable job in the Melbourne area for less than $700 ish?
Thanks in advance,
James

Just curious, did you have the seats installed by MG Workshops?
Perhaps visit and have a talk with Andy, I know they have a trimmer they use for the restorations.
He did the seat on my MG for roadworthy, it was a really nicely done job (worth noting that mine only needed a patch, not a full recover)
As for the seat cover reccomendation, you can sometimes purchase pre-cut replacement fabric kits (often also pre-sewn) that you install yourself after having cut off the old fabric.
It's often more cost effective than having a trimmer make the cover from scratch.
I'd still suggest having a trimmer instal the cover if you find one, since they are incredibly difficult to get perfect without wrinkles.

For reference that is the kind of cover you'll be wanting.
(Link is just an example, I've never actually used that seller so can't vouch for how good they are)

You can get a pair of good condition NA (or even NB seats which are nicer) seats for a couple hundred dollars.
I'd just jump on gumtree.

I can recommend Lyndon Meakin 72 Hull Road Croydon 9725 2500 or 0468771 769. He does affordable work. Another option if it suits is to get lambswool covers made to fit- Blacksheep in Ringwood offers options -There are others around but you did not say where you are situated

Might be worth contacting this ebay seller (0*4*0*4 * 6*7*0 * 3*2*1) who has advertised MX5 NA factory seat material which he's removed from MX5 NAs he's replaced with the leather covers he sells: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/170912886207
A number of forumites have bought leather seat covers from: Clarence Choo, X-Otic Leather, Unit 2, 50-52 Delby St, Silverwater 0*4*0*8 * 2*6*8 * 8*8*8 or 0*2 * 9*6*4*8 * 2*2*8*2, so they might also have some old MX5 NA factory seat material which they've removed from MX5 NAs they've replaced with the leather covers they sell.

Hi Hks_kansei,
I've known Andy for many years. Unfortunately their trimmer is no longer working so they don't have a 'go to guy' at the moment. At least thats what he told me when I asked him a couple of months ago. I don't know who they'll be using for their restorations going forward.
Thanks for the example listings guys - Much appreciated! I'll do some research with these and see what I can learn.
Cheers,
AB

Ahh, I knew their existing guy retired, but thought he'd found someone else.
I know one of the restorations had some work done by a different trimmer, but that must have been a one off.

Also a seat cover supplier at corner of Warragul Road and North Road Oakleigh South. No name out front and the shop looks like chaos, but he has patterns for virtually anything and well priced in my experience
