free entry into the gorge so that's a plus and then a brisk 300 metre walk along a sealed track then onto a soft sandy and rocky surface area and a picturesque view

Re: billybunters - from a bmw z4 to a mx5 se
rarely - well not much anyway
backtrack 50 metres and to the right and across the sand to the far side of the gorge and out with the camera again
very easy place to get a good photo here

the road out to ormiston gorge is an interesting one. several signs indicating you are in wild horse county plus lots of signs to let you know people could be about on the side of the road.
these signs are sitting out in the middle of virtually no-where

plus you also think in the middle of Australia the road would be pretty flat too. not the case as on this road a camels back would possibly be straighter

Re: billybunters - from a bmw z4 to a mx5 se
aboriginal ochre pits
located about 90 klm out from alice springs - same road as the ormiston gorge. you then turn off about 300 metres along a narrow sealed road to a parking bay. free entry to the site and add another 300 metres walk via a paved walking track.
this would be your first glimpse of the beginning of the ochre pits at the 200 metre mark at the first creek crossing. after that you come to a viewing platform where you can either take a few photo or walk right in
large sign to the right letting you know -do not remove the ochre from the site and if caught a $5000 fine applies. better photo as experienced if you take the extra 100 metre walk and wait for all the tourists to go and take their shots and pi--off
