You sure about that as my na6 has fins and I had thought all along that it was an open diff.

I'm sure that all 1.8 diffs have fins regardless.

But to be honest, I've never actually looked at an NA6 diff....
Every mx5 I've looked at has already been swapped to the larger diff.

I drove the car home and started pulling it apart straight away. Just drove it for about an hour or so, but I was certain that the shifter was not a 100% ok.

The center console was out already, so decided to take the shifter out and inspect. Both rubber boots have seen better days and the little plastic cup/bush at the bottom was cracked.

Ordered a complete rebuild kit from Japan and replaced the boots as well. Sucked the old oil out from the turret, cleaned with old rugs (painstakingly) and filled with fresh gear oil.

This may look like child’s play to some of you experienced folk, but I like to note these little details. :)

The 'kit' ready to go (bottom boot already installed):

Finished it all up with a new Voodoo shift knob  :

Cheers..!

It was an ebay order. Seller : "JDM PLANET" (admins, please remove if not allowed)

I like to buy from local sellers, but a certain well known MX5 specialist over east had the little bottom cup/bush on ebay for 18 bucks.! :? The whole kit was about 47 dollars posted from Japan..!

After the initial clean-up, it was time to replace all the fluids and some consumables. 8)

The following got replaced at 154,390 kms. Noting it down here for my own reference as well:
** Engine oil – Castrol Magnatec 5w 30
** Transmission oil - Castrol Syntrans 75w 85
** Diff oil - Castrol Axel EPX 80w 90
** Clutch and brake fluid (bleed system and replace) – Castrol Dot 4
** Coolant – Nulon Premium 33% concentrate
** Replaced air filter, oil filter and fuel filter

The only fluid I could not properly flush and replace was power steering fluid. Not exactly sure how to flush this completely, need to figure out how to.

Here`s some of the good juice that went in. If the car behaves well, it will be getting even better stuff next time around (Redline MT90, Motul Gear 300, Motul RBF600 etc... ). :

Got a quick question for you experts regarding a roll bar/style bar.

I got this bar with the car, but the previous owner had it removed due to space issues.

I can’t see any branding/ADR approval sticker, etc.. , so I am not exactly sure whether this is a proper roll bar or some sort of a cheap knockoff style bar. I can’t seem to find any information online about this particular design.

I can see a couple of bolts on either side of the rear parcel tray, where the bar would bolt in to. There`s a couple of think metal sandwich plates used from underneath/boot, and these plates would also bolt on to the parcel tray to improve strength.

The front of the bar bolts on to the factory brace bar attachments points on each seat belt pillar. An additional bolt would go through the side of the pillar on each side. So the bar is attached with 8 bolts altogether.

What do you think? Would this be OK for road and light track use? If anyone has used a similar bar, please let me know. Some pics below:

Looks like an agi roll cage.
I'm not an expert but maybe someone else could verify.

I have an AGI roll bar and this is not it.
Looks more like a Brown Davies bar.

I thought maybe Brown Davis as well. Has it got any numbers stamped into the lugs on the bottom of the main hoop?

Thanks for the replies.

Did a quick search, it does look like a Brown Davis roll-bar which is described here : http://mx5cartalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=45301&start=15

Would be nice to know for sure, but i`ll keep looking at online pics for the moment.

P.S. TCR, i`ll check for the numbers tonight after work. :)
