Have a great day all!

Look after Thane & Matt from the 86/BRZ Club, both Orange 86's - Thane has travelled down from Mt Isa for some track fun and has been really busy running sprints at Lakeside Saturday, 'happy laps' at Lakeside yesterday and of course will join you today

Play safe and I look forward to having a look at the times on Natsoft later today

Thanks very much to Adam and the QR staff for today.

I wasn't expecting too much from today. Never been to QR before and never thought much of the track layout when watching the V8's on TV.

But...

Had an awesome day.
Thanks very much to Brian Ferrabee for leading us first timers on sighting laps of each of the three circuits. And Adam for coming up with the idea.

Turns 1 and 2 were terrifying. Don't think I got the line of turn 2 right until the end of the day.
Turn 3 (dipper) was a complete mystery in both directions; Sprint and Clubman. I just couldn't get that right.
Think I was getting the final turn all wrong too.
Took it wider when doing the National circuit at the end of the day but my times were way off everyone else that stuck around for the late finish.

Didn't throw my toys out of the pram this time though.
Just genuinely enjoyed the whole day and the company.

Three groups meant very quick turnarounds even though we were doing 7 timed laps at a time. Plenty of room out on track for me to find my own space and experiment without getting in anyone else's way.

Hope we didn't loose too much for the club and get back there at least once again next year.

Yes a good day once again with fine relaxed camaraderie. Thanks Adam!

Good to catch up with friendly faces. The only bad thing was my stupid car took to a new idea that it has recently devised of cutting out above 4500rpm when under load. It seems to be dictating to me how it wants to be dríven, so only did about 6 laps all day. Truly, I'm going to give it a good thrashing with a broken tree branch :?

Had a great day debuting the AD08s and applying some of the development I've had as a driver over the year or so since we were at QR last. The 7 flying laps for 3 groups certainly kept the turnover high and I ended up running something like 43 or 44 flying laps, and I didn't run the National session, so pretty good value for mine. Groups sorted themselves out pretty quickly so I had plenty of clean running. I was in two minds whether to run the last Sprint session and did at the back of the field with the roof down and had a great old time reeling in Zoe in her 86.

I got more confident in the AD08s through the day and looking at the RaceChrono details I'd found a couple of tenths in the Sprint sessions at the first split after 1 and 2 versus the Clubman. I remembered Ross's comment about entering the Eastern Loop at Lakeside and using the turn in to wash off speed for you rather than braking and was using this technique after a very light dab of brakes into 2. I also discovered I could work the final right turn of the lap in the Clubman variant holding the throttle constant rather than backing out of it completely which looks like it was worth a couple of km/h at the end of the main straight - generally seeing around 144 km/h before chickening out.

I think I've got quite a bit out of running a few events in recent weeks, including the Morgan Park day, the Who Karted "social" event last weekend, plus a couple of Happy Laps events. Morgan Park and the kart event have had me thinking a lot more about using the full width of the track and working placement back from where you want to be exiting a corner (that fast sequence at the Kart track that could be taken flat if you were in the right place two corners earlier is a great example) and I really felt on it in the first two sessions of the Sprint layout.

Shame we don't get more people down to QR - turns 1 and 2 in particular are worth it, and the 'flip flops' of the short cuts between the straights do need to be thought about.

Hey all,
Thanks for coming out to play today. I had a great time, trying to manhandle GoGo around the tracks. I thought I was doing well until I looked at my previous times... no PBs for me
Happily, there were no major incidents that I know of, although there were many dramatic clouds of dust during the day. There were some overheated brakes, some missing brakes, slipping clutches, shagged tyres and electrical gremlins, but I think everyone has got home with their car in one piece.

I took a punt on running 3 groups and 7x hot lap sessions. I think it worked OK, but I do concede there was very little time to get much done between runs. I reckon canteen revenue would have been down. I hope that all the novices found the sighting laps useful. It was about all I could think to organise, in the absence of Doug. Special thanks to Brian Ferrabee, who kindly led the sighting laps for you.

Let's do it again at Lakeside on September 12th.

Cheers

Vat good news on the AD08's, you should be able to apex at 135 in T1 and 125 for T2 :)

Seat time helps, never truer words spoken.

Well done all! I checked Natsoft when I got home from work yesterday and was totally impressed!

Whilst not an MX-5, the times set by Thane Irwin in his 86 astounded me, particularly on the National and I went back and compared his to those posted Sunday at the Shannon's meet at QR

Excellent work from a guy down from Mount Isa for a break

Did the same as well Roger, good times by Thane!

Thane went out and did 1:27's off the bat on the national. It has taken many laps of the National for my times to get into the consistent 1:27's.

As said earlier it was a great day for finding your own space.
However, I did (unsuccessfully) try to latch onto CaptainNate and his Pinkbits Warrior for one session.
Image

Only my second time out with the GoPro and I had it hanging upside down this time.
At Morgan Park I had it upright but on one of the diagonal bars of the rollbar so it had a large chunk of the passenger seat headrest in the frame.

I think the angle is now much better (showing more track) but I can't use the GoPro editing software on my very old (32 bit) laptop so can't get anything up on youtube.
Will see if my daughter can help me out on her laptop tonight.

RaceChrono (free version) on my Samsung S5.
Think the times were pretty close to Natsoft results for the whole day.
Image
National: 1:39:20 RaceChrono v 1:39:1275 Natsoft
Think my speeds at the end of the straights were acceptable but based on Mark's comments above I guess I was scrubbing off too much speed for T1 and T2. In my setup I did feel very close to the edge of my limits though. Still, great fun accelerating through them.

Was thinking of getting a Qstarz GPS but now think I probably need to sort out my computer side of things first and get this editing/uploading thing beat.

Ian my suggested speeds were for AD08's, however feel free to use them :)

Other suggestions
T3 - 75
T4 - 85
T5 - 108
T6 - 71

Straight speeds are T6-T1 168, T1-T2 151, T2-T3 189, T3-T4 166, T5-T6 165. Notwithstanding, the straight speeds differences your corner speeds are quite good with a stock car!

You are getting faster plus enjoying it, what more could you ask for? Looking forward to watching your times get faster!

Cheers Mark,
If it was only as simple as slapping on some AD08's I'd be down at Bob Jane's right now.

Can't repeat how much I did enjoy yesterday.*

If there'd been more traffic I doubt it (I) would have been the same. Still struggling with cars around me, especially on the fast corners, but it does seem to be easier to get out of the way on the straights at QR.

I expected much longer run off areas than there appeared to be. Though I was assured there was plenty for a little, light MX-5 :D

* and I was getting soundly thrashed by a Ford Focus Trend for most of the day

Yesterday was good!

Here's a video of me trying to catch a white NA, that was fun whoever that was!

It's deceptive - last year I fell off backwards on the way INTO 2 at what would have been around 100 - 110 and didn't even make it to the gravel trap!

Do you think having the roof down cost you 1 second in itself or were you having fun with a different driving style.
I haven't tracked with the roof up yet. Looking back, yesterday would have been a great opportunity for me to try it out, though I'm not yet consistent enough to draw any trustworthy conclusion.

Could have smashed that PB in your signature
