They just hopped and pogo around, it really felt like the damping was way too soft for the spring (damping was set fairly high too....)

Were these mx5's with dynamic pro sports and 8/6 springs?

All mx5
Not sure on the model.

I know one of them yellowspeed couldn't even get the top hat bolt spacing right and he owner had to file out the top hat mounts to fit them.

Happy with my BC's. Ideally I'd like something a bit softer as I'm not a racer. I'd have a look into tein flex z's as well, they fit the price and brief, and have +10 jdm points included.

They also come with 2 stickers and a resin badge thing.
So that's like 15kw all up there. :p

Reds start at $2600. Only get Blues for $1500.

Vekt - try the coilovers first before buying sway bars. You may not need them - depends on spring rate, f to r spring rate ratio, etc, etc

I stand corrected - MCA Blues!

Disagree about the front sway bar though. Any decent track oriented set up will require a significantly stiffer (like 2-3x or more) front sway bar.

Had the pleasure today of driving cars that had Xidas and MCA Reds, now it was only a few happy laps of Lakeside but:

MCA Reds
They felt great was very surprised at how smooth the ride was, nowhere near as 'brutal' as mine. Not sure on the spring rates either but it acted very predictable and the ride was firm but not spongy. However, it was not my car so did not 'push' too hard and its setup was more towards daily than track. If you wanted a track/daily coilover would seriously consider these, very impressed!

Xidas
Also got to have my first drive of a turbo car, last turbo sports thing I had was a Kawasaki GPZ750 turbo... Xidas it was not the same ride as the MCA Reds, a little more on the 'harsh' side but still comfortable and again not as harsh as my setup. The car was also predictable in corners and not much perceptible roll, weight transfer was also like the MCA Reds smooth.

I would be hard pressed to pick between the MCA Reds and Xidas, but if I had to the MCA Reds would get the money only because the ride was a little less harsh. Yes if they used the same spring rates and the same car the 'result' maybe different. Makes me rethink if a track car really needs stiff springs and a harsh ride, made me miss a stock NA6. Did not help when the car with the MCA Reds had my old dash in it, was tempted to take it back :)

Hopefully a few people who drove my NA6 today will give some feedback. Certain person managed a 1:25.7 for the happy lap session ... I also have the top speed reached

Not always the case.
My track NB has 11/7 MCA's valved for track use. With a 24mm whiteline bar there was too much understeer on circuits. With a bigger rear bar to bring back to neutral, there was then not enough rear droop for traction on tight hillclimb corners.
So best setup was with standard bars all round - as MCA said from the beginning !

Sway bars need to match each other. From a "balanced" setup (and this means different things to different people), go bigger on the front, you need to go bigger on the rear to balance it.

So OVERALL:

Stiffer sways =============> Softer sways
^^^^^^^^^^^ =============> ^^^^^^^^^^^
Faster corners =============> Slower corners
^^^^^^^^^^^ =============> ^^^^^^^^^^^
Gripper tyres =============> Slipperier tyres

Sway bars resist roll.

Understeer - larger rear

Oversteer or picking up inside rear - larger front

However, the above can also be affected by tire pressures, swing rates and or damper settings. Picking up inside rear can be influenced by diff type open/torsen/clutch. But, clutch pack whilst curing the inside rear issue causes understeer...

Correct, & that's what I did.
Bigger bars both ends gave balance, but reduced rear traction on very tight corners (due to less rear droop I presume). Smaller factory rear & bigger front bar gave rear traction, but unwanted understeer.
So I had to put factory bars back on both ends to keep balance & traction.
Cheers

Hillclimb and track are too very different puppies. So the setups will need to be different. No need to argue setups as then you'd be arguing apples vs oranges.

:BROADY:
Thanks for saving me the time :)

MCA spec'd your bars, presumably as a happy compromise for the type of driving you're doing.

I don't hill climb... So I bet, all else being equal, my bars would need to be bigger... Front and rear. My spring rates would also be different. And the tyres you run have an impact as well.

That said, if I could be bothered, I'm sure I'd gain time rotating bars between, say, Wakefield (or south circuit), and SMP GP circuit. T1, T4 and T5 at SMP GP have very different needs than, say, T4/5 and the fishhook at WP. As it is, I'm also compromising with my sways.

My NA8 daily driver has MCA Blues, very happy with them, feel reasonably soft on the road, but still firm enough for the track.
Running 10kg front 6kg rear, with standard swaybars, NT01 tyres, ~280whp on pump.
Although I might get better high speed grip with a heavier front swaybar and gripper tyres, I am happy with how it performs for now (and don't want to spend more money on it).
Oh and I drive it to work every day.

Ken.

Hey guys,

Cheers for all the responses on this topic, been very helpful with things.

After trying a couple of friends cars, though not mx5's so probably not a great way to judge XD, I've decided to go with BC coilovers. They seem to be pretty well suited to my needs and very much within my budget, while MCA red's do sound pretty awesome there's still other things I need/want to do to the car i.e torsen and turbo (A guy can dream right?)

And cheers for the advice about sway bars too, though it has brought up another question for me, would it make sense to get a new set of bushings and replace the old stock ones at the same time as doing the coils? Or wait and see how the coils change the handling without them?
