Sell through Shannons

Postby trader » Fri Jul 22, 2016 4:27 pm

It's been on my bucket list for some time to attend a Shannon's car Auction just for fun. And as a follow up just wondering whether anyone has
tried to sell their MX5 this way. I cant find any record of MX's being sold thru the auction and wonder why as they are now becoming a bit of a classic and there is plenty of unique examples around. Is it an expensive option - their site doesn't tell you how much it's going to cost?

I'd just ring them and ask.
They've shown the auctions on telly. Some stupidly high prices for 'classics'.

Thats right- check their terms. You can also quite readily sell cars like an MX5 through the Healey Factory but it comes at a cost. MX5s are not in the Classic car class yet and a co like Shannons may or may not include an MX5- it probably relates to it being a special model and special attraction. The higher the value of the car the more the auctioneer makes on a sale.

You could sell your car through Shannons, but their market isn't necessarily your market, plus you will pay feed to Shannons to do so.

The MX5, while considered a classic by some, isn't on the radar of most of the buyers at a Shannons auction. As you would know the cars there are either euro, US or aussie classics, and the aussie stuff is usually muscle or rare/quirky/barn find type cars that generate interest, as are most of the others.

For a run of the mill car like an MX5, here, the clubs, and usual web based classifieds or word of mouth would be best bet to get the best price for the car.

In my case I only advertised my early NA6, number 321, on this site and it was sold within a month at a price both I and the buyer were happy with.

The other thing to remember, is that for an MX5 at an auction like Shannons, the best way to get a sale would be an unreserved auction, which would be a big gamble on your part if there is only one bidder who puts a low ball bid in, a bit like ebay but without the ability to pull the auction once a bid has been placed.

Fine for a highly sought after vehicle, but for the less sought after there are better options, as some less sought after go for fairly cheap prices.
