SE radiator hoses

hi and thanks. Have bought a new radiator from mx5 mania but they can't , and nor can mazda, supply the hoses. There is a local ebayer that has hoses but their fitment guide covers all nb's whereas I was advised the se was definitely different. I've searched but to no avail.

Why not check say Bursons for info on the Mackay hoses i.e. price availability. How old are the hoses ( probably no way to know) and does it matter. Mackay used to make the hoses in their own plant ( Moorabbin) but I suppose if they sourced out it would be to their spec and control.

You could use amayama to buy direct from Japan. Just need to know the part number.

I would advise against getting the hoses from either Repco or Burson if they source them from Gates. The Gates lower hose will fit but you need to cut about 4.5cm to fit and even then, the elbow will touch the big air intake hose very snugly which is not ideal in the long run. Mazda told me they could source them in a couple of days but I couldn't wait due to a leakage. Was told by Repco that Mazda has their own source of supply but I'm not sure about that.

I always use genuine dealer parts unless they can't supply them in the time frame I need. Repco has failed me too many times with poor fitting parts such as a Toyota fuel pump that will not pump if the car is parked uphill, a Honda air filter that needs trimming for proper fit and the above upper radiator hose. It's just not worth the aggro. Can't imagine Bursons can be any much better. I mainly use these parts suppliers for consumables and for non critical items.

I would like to source a complete set of small hoses from Amayama but I don't have the correct part numbers, and if anyone can provide them, that will be much appreciated.

If you're doing your own replacement, be prepared to deal with that sob lower hose especially the end that fits onto the engine block which is right next to the turbo with little room to maneuver. A big long nose vice grip or this will help

I let my local mechanic install my lower hose after realizing I didn't have the right tool to handle the job.

thanks- the car is 12 yo and the upper one looks fine.just thought as I was doing the radiator, I should do the hoses.
not sure whether to cancel the order ( ebay) or not.If they 'fit', I might give it a go!

You can imagine that Bursons are the biggest supplier of spare parts to the motor industry - i.e. that's where the mechanics go. One of the problems with parts is that sometimes the catalog cross references are not correct. If a Gates hose does not fit it may be because Gates have used the wrong cross reference. It would also not be a great surprise if Mazda do have their own sources. When the vehicle was first built and parts supplied to Mazda for fitting there would have been a prime source. Hoses can be copied pretty easily same as for fan belts so that opens up otter suppliers to produce. If it were me I would simply ask Bursons if they list Mackay as a supplier- they will tell you. For those that don't know Mackay was a significant supplier to the car industry for rubber esp hoses and bushes etc. If the order is already placed and the part looks in good condition- no cracks and it will fit then at the very least its a spare item. Presumably if the profile is wrong then you send it back.

Sorry what I meant earlier was the lower hose doesn't need trimming. Only the upper one needs trimming but it will still rub against the big air intake hose with the Gates brand.

I gave the Repco staff all details and stressed that it was for the SE model with a turbo and they verified these details against their database and yet the upper hose still doesn't quite fit.

I strongly advise replacing both hoses given the age of the car. Appearance can be deceiving, and furthermore the hoses have to deal with higher coolant pressure in the SE.

I ordered a lower hose for my SE a few months ago from MX5 Mania and they told me it was the last one in the country, so its probably my fault you can't get one...sorry.

Probably a bit late for you now, but the Mazda part number is BP8J-15-18YB

I ordered the generic NB series Silicon hose set from Mania.

Yes, none of the 4 smaller hoses were usable..... made great replacement vacuum lines though! :mrgreen:

Lower hose fitted fine (despite the factory item being a slightly different part to other NB cars due to turbo clearance issues)
Top hose needed to be trimmed a bit though...... :wink:
