Exhaust crackle, good or bad?

Postby ED_MX5 » Fri Jul 22, 2016 9:21 pm

Let's have a fun discussion.
Some say that "snap crackle and pop" is fine in the exhaust.
Others say it's a very bad idea.
Where do you stand and why?

Were talking overrun right?
Mine has been doing it for years. Perhaps the exhaust gasket is leaking? Not sure.
Is it safe? No idea
Does it put a smile on my face? Yes!!!!
Am I immature for an old bloke? For sure....

Thats the best part about the full exhaust on my NC. the overrun sound :D

Is it bad - Well the NC does it from the factory, just an exhaust loudens the experience

All it means is the car is a bit rich, or is fuelling on overrun when the injectors should be off.

The only real downsides are that if it's fuelling on overrun the cat will blow out quicker (cats don't like fuel burning in the exhaust) and you'll have worse fuel economy.

If it's just a pop or bang when you jump of throttle it's normal and nothing of concern.

When I had the old exhaust on my car it used to do it often, I could tap the throttle to pump some fuel in and intentionally make a loud whipcrack

If I was going hard and got the exhaust good and hot I'd sometimes have a bit of flame pop out the back.

I miss that exhaust

I like it depending upon the style of car. Sports car = sure!
Luxury car = no.
