2004 Mx5 non turbo

Hi everyone.

So i've been in the market for an mx5 for around half a year now and this one has come up in the Blue mountains. I wanted to see what you think of it. Does the SVT vvt engine mean the car will be harder to do a timing belt change on (which is due in 20,000kms) or are there any reasons not to buy this particular year model with kms being at the 230,000 od km mark? I rung the guy today and he seems quite genuine, he is the 2nd owner and a 'lady in her 50's' owned it before him. He is a mechanic and said that the car runs very well, no smoke or burning oil and he did tell me about all imperfections which amounted to a few scratches and a slightly cracked rear headlight. In short, is there any reason for me not to buy this mx5? Yellowspeed coilovers

He sent pics of the interior, really clean and said the soft top doesn't leak at all and no paint fade.

Timing belt recommended along with water pump at 100,000 klm intervals- app $800 sometime down the track .VVT is not going to make any difference for replacing the belt You can probably do better than this car and with lower KLMs. Paying more for lower KLMs is arguably a better idea. You can never take the KLM off the car- so if you buy a car at say 170,000 thats 50,000 lower and how many years of driving does that represent? I am surprised that you cannot find an MX5 series 2 NB after 6 mths looking. However its your money and your budget.

there seems to be an awefull lot of mechanics selling MX5 and ladies in thier midlife as previous owners.
Call me a synical cranky old fart. But as soon as anyone says that. I'd be running just because of principle.

True about the kms. I just thought that it's 2004 so a newer nb with less age wear and tear. The interior is spotless. I currently have a 4age ae93 sx seca with 363000kms, and it runs well enough.

I live in northern NSW, not heaps of them around here and i've had a look at a few NA's that had one big prob or another. I'm getting over the local searches haha

Welcome to the forum, Zac! I'm from the Northern Rivers and have been through the same process as you... had to go to Sydney to buy my 1990 after spending many months looking around for a good car within my budget. Found it here in the for sale section and haven't had a moments regret, so I can recommend buying from a forum member. I wouldn't worry about the odo too much - mine had 272k on it when I bought it and runs fine - what's more important is how well it's been looked after, regularly serviced, etc. Good luck with your search.

Thanks for the welcome! Good to be hear. Yes haha, the Northern Rivers doesn't have the best selection of cars to chose from compared to Sydney, the Gold Coast or Brisbane

I joined the forum because my friends who also live in Northern NSW recently bought a 1998 nb with a fully forged turbo engine (joined as well). They got it tuned to 250hp atw the other day on 22 psi i believe. Had a drive of it about a week ago. These car's are a blast!

(Good luck getting 300kw Brad! haha)

Anyway, I think that the silver 2004 is in good condition and the guy seems really open and genuine on the phone, so I'm gonna make him an offer

I don't know NB's all that well, but that seems like a good price for an '04 model. Best of luck with the purchase!

Haha yep, thanks mate.

I rung him up this morning, I made a few reasonable offers but he was quite firm on the price. For a sight unseen car I don't want to pay that much and risk it, so I'm probably gonna let it go.

Will definetly be on the lookout on this forums for sale thread. Cheers everyone
