Replacement NBa engine Rebuld or replace?

Hi guys, seems my 2000 NBa has a cracked piston. My mechanic says it is terminal.
Rebuild existing engine or put in an engine from a wreck. That is my choice. Looking for a cost effective solution. Any thoughts? Have any of you done either and what was you experience. Cheaper to rebuild? I will have no hands on at all. Cheers. Simon

Rebuilds will cost more.

Low mileage engine are out there to buy. Just make sure you know the history of the engine.

Keep the whole head and inlet system if you do swap the engine, don't scrap it. There are often people on the forum looking for one to upgrade an NA8.

If forced induction is on the menu,rebuilding with stronger components is better but expensive,otherwise for normal use a lower kilometer used engine is the go.when we pulled my son Ken's (90,000k) VVT engine apart for strengthening everything measured up within new tolerances,it was almost shame to pull good parts out.
If there's not too much collateral damage from piston debris I'm interested in purchasing a cheap engine that suits rebuild (at my leisure though. I'm mostly retired so labour is free!)
