15x8 185/55/15 after some pics? Tyre & tein talk.

Postby LittleRed5 » Tue Jul 05, 2016 9:43 pm

Hey guys just did a little upgrade to wheels and suspension, went from 16's to 15x8 +17 all round and they came with a 45 profile but its not giving me desired ride and appearance. Also I paired it with a new set of Tein flex coilovers which has result in a ride hight of about 50mm and still mile of space between the tyre and fender.

Im not chasing epic stance, rather I would like to be able to get in and out of my driveway without the planks of wood. Hence I'm after some pictures of a 55 profile or bigger!
I've seen plenty of 50 profile on the wheels thread but only 1 of a 55 seeing as not many people put up the details of the tyres!
Looking for a bit more side wall to compensate for some of the ride height, feel and I also like the look of a fuller tyer

Also if anyone has tein flex coilovers what damper settings do you like to run? Looking for a bit of feedback on what is a good balance for spirited weekend driving more than general day to day duties as its a weekender.

Thanks in advance!

Let me get this right.

You want to put a 185 tyre on an 8 inch rim?

Yeah, its what it has on there now and its fairly minimal stretch of the tyre wall. You'd think with a lager wall it would further reduce that. I dont see the big deal.

205/50.
Yokohama has a 4 for 3 sale on currently and Bridgestone do regular sales also.

185 tyre would fit on a 6" rim max. If you're using an 8" rim, you should be on a 225 tyre.

But hey...if you want to wear jeans that are two sizes too small, no one is going to stop you.

People really cant look past the first number hey? Let me word it differently as to not confuse. It currently has 185/45 (I know, dont have a panic attack) and seeing as these didnt come accross as ridiculously streched in my opinion I thought a 55 profile would further reduce this. Hey maybe a slightly wider tyre will work in my application but that's why i put the question to the mx5 community. I'm trying to maintain a fitment where I wouldn't have to pump the fenders but merely lip them mildly.

I've seen plenty of 205/50's and information on them is quite common but thanks for your input.

205/50 has a taller sidewall than 185/55. 102.5 mm vs 101.75 mm.

It's a lot easier to find 205/50 tyres in a compound and tread pattern to suit an MX5 than it is to find 185s. 185/55 tyres on our market are mostly (all?) shyte.

Thats actual helpful information, thank you. Im just looking for some tyre info to replace the current one with some that fit more correctly.

I also notice the quality of this size of tyre when I had a hunt around but I'm not looking for a cheap solution.

If you're struggling to get the wheels to fit, sell them to a Honda owner and buy some that do.
I'd like to see a photo of what you consider to be 'not stretched.'

and

and

The above tyre/rim combination don't look as streched as one might have expected....i.e.

If you want more sidewall. You will need some 185/70R15 light truck tyres. 185/55 is not bigger than 205/50.

Yep, the 50/55/60/etc profile is a percentage of the width rather than an actual measurement.

So as tyre width increases, so does sidewall height even though the profile stays the same.
