Australia's fastest MX5 @ Phillip Island

Postby lightyear » Thu Jun 30, 2016 6:20 am

You would imagine the fastest MX5 to ever lap the best track in Australia to be some big dollar race car. Sorry if you came in expecting pics of some amazing MX5, or wanting to read a spec sheet longer than your arm.
But it's just my silver NB8B with the oem 212,500 km unopened motor, oem SE turbo, SE cast manifold and SE cast downpipe leading to a 2.25" exhaust with cat and muffler. Oem Torsen diff, oem suspension with the original 212,500km bushes throughout. Blitz coilovers with 6 and 8kg road springs and a big front swaybar.

Why is it quicker than every other MX5?

Because I spent a bit of time researching aero. And came up with a package that i figured would work. Proof is in the pudding...
This is no big dollar package either. Less than $500 total spend. Obviously if you payed me to do it I would charge a lot more.

The lap time is not in the wholly F$&@ing sh*t that's fast category. But nobody has gone quicker in an MX5.

Moral of the story, research, and sift through the garbage. Or if it's too hard, or your time poor, I will have to start a business and do it for you :) - need to talk the Beavis into it as my sidekick. He will have the 2nd fastest MX5 when he gets his going ;)

Oops, wrong results. Actually, this puts my 1:43.8 into perspective of older technology, but still very cool and professionally built race cars dríven by pro's on big fat slick rubber. And big $$$$$.

Let's see who comes forward to knock me off my spot. I know Owen is up for the challenge, and with his car he is very likely to go faster. If not, I will be forced to drive his car. 8)

Think the car NitroDann refers to doesn't even have a roof.
UK since return: Standard NC2 (horrid), C200K, ND2 BBR, NC2 BBR200 (loved it), NC BBR300 (better than BARMY), V-Special, turbo NB8B (my 84th car)

Cat Flaps speak for themselves.

My old Honda powered NB in full street trim was good for about 30 kph extra VMAX over Dave's car.

Still 6 seconds a lap slower with completely OEM aero I was sacrificing too much speed in some of the faster entry's.
and 1150 kg wet weight.

PI is the fastest per kilometer track for sure, cars may go a fraction quicker top speed at Bathurst
but PI is the quickest lap for sure.

Time would have won you that Victorian Time Attack they had for the first time this year in Street Class.

Well done light year. Amazing times. Never been to the Island but keen to try and make a trip there next year.

460whp/tonne would definitely help but it still have to be dríven and stay together.

and it's always interesting to compare against the old group a cars. Might knock a few of their times off at the next state round.

Dann, Beavis and Lightyear - we should invite Nick Cancian as well and all have a run in the Cue sports 1 hour at Phillip Island in late november to see who is the fastest. Maybe also invite Dave Raddatz with his turbo car to come and play as well - that is pretty much all the fastest 5's in the country at one meeting at the same time. All of these cars also run BP motors so would be a great comparison (and we might all embarrass some supposedly faster stuff for some extra bragging rights).

Hell yeah. Beavis will be turbo soon also.

520whp/tonne is mental. Must have 450whp or more! Good effort!

There must be more than a few very quick MX5s currently in hibernation just waiting for a challenge to encourage them to resurface.

Can an MX5 go sub 40s at PI?
