We need to be specific here, as "The Club" lock was the one that failed because the "u" shaped sections that holds onto the wheel itself wasn't welded strong enough onto the main shaft, but a similar designed one made by Aunger passed. The Aunger one is the one that is a square tube sliding inside a square tube.

They tested several steering wheel locks and the Aunger Prolock was the only one that passed/didn't break/couldn't be picked.

You could be right Steampunk. I mostly recall the bending of the steering wheel to get the lock off. I can remember the NRMA person saying that the locks were still a good visual deterrent. I can also remember thinking it took a fair bit of strength to bend the steering wheel as much as it needed to get the lock off! My puny strength couldn't do it (yes I actually tried :roll: :mrgreen: )!!

The locks are great to stop joyriders, since often they just want to get in quickly and go, and they dont want that extra 5mins of removing the lock to potentially be caught.

Professional thieves, or ones after a specific car (parting, export, etc) usually just carry cutters and lop through the locks anyway.


I've got a really old lock at home that hooks under the brake pedal (or clutch) and then reaches up to hook onto the steering wheel.

Yeah, this was done on another work car that was stolen that was using the original Club Lock. Been using the Pro Lock on my MX5s since the '90s.
