Venturing down the slippery slope - SKYHI Motorsports SE
Some of you will know me from my NA ownership days, and/or from the racetrack. After recently selling my 2013 Toyota 86, I needed another toy in the Garage and decided an SE would fit the bill.
Last weekend, I came across one on the MX5 Australia FB page which caught my eye. Rang the owner, who sounded quite surprised, as he'd actually decided the keep the car and though he'd removed all the for sale adverts. Anyway, he said he still had the car and that I could come have a look at it if I wanted. I wondered whether I was wasting my time, but decided to go down for a look anyway.
Had a look over it, and whilst it needed a little TLC cosmetically, it had some nice mods, a decent service history, just clocked 100,000Ks, and the owner seemed like a real enthusiast who shared a passion for the track like myself. We went for a drive and 10 minutes later, we were talking money. He said he needed to sleep on it, but thankfully the next morning he rang to say he would sell me the car at an agreed price.
Finally picked it up last night and drove it home, followed by 2 hours of detailing to get it to a standard I considered acceptable to drive to work and show it off (OCD much )
Have raced a couple of turbo MX5s in the past, but have a lot to learn about the turbo cars, so looking forward to meeting a few of you, and picking at the MX5Cartalk brains trust as I journey down the slippery slope that is MX5 turbo ownership.
Current Mods are:
AEM CAI
Begi Intake Pipe
Turbosmart BOV
Turbosmart MBC
Full exhaust (unknown at this stage, but apparently NitroDann muffler)
EBay Intercooler
SAAS boost gauge
TrackDog front splitter
BD Roll Bar
MCA Blue Coilovers
DBA 4000 T3 front and rear rotors
QFM A1RM pads all round
Front tow hook
plus a couple of cosmetic items.
Also recently had new radiator, new radiator hoses, & new battery.
To Do List:
Hardtop
Injectors
Chiptorque or ECU and tune
15x8 Enkei RPF1 wheels
ADR approved race seats
5 or 6 point harness

That's what I'm telling him too Too many people have gone the chip, then bought the ECU after realising the chip was a half measure.

I know that's the best solution, but like most things it'll come down to money. At this point I'm going to be happy with a well tuned 200 -220 rwhp on the standard turbo, as any more than that, and you really need to consider the stress on the drive train and serious brake upgrades etc if your undertaking the odd track day.

Nice Paul, looks like a really nice unit. Bit handier than Vic too. Keep my number in case you push it past the limit on the track... I still have a nice forged engine here

Ah ok. I thought some of the Chiptorque guys were getting around 150kw at the tyres?

Possibly, but is it smooth, does it stay cool, is it responsive, are the air fuel ratios safe?
I dynod a chipped nb this morning, and one yesterday, I'd be glad to show you the data as to why I'd recommend a more complete solution in this case.

Yeah all points worth considering. As I said, I know it's the best solution, might just mean saving for a bit longer to get it. We'll talk before i make any decision.

UK since return: Standard NC2 (horrid), C200K, ND2 BBR, NC2 BBR200 (loved it), NC BBR300 (better than BARMY), V-Special, turbo NB8B (my 84th car)

I'm all aboard the ECU train of thought, but I'd still be interested in seeing the data.

Whilst going over the car last night in more detail, I noticed a couple of small dents in the drivers side guard. Once again my OCD couldn't handle it, so I was straight on the phone to have them pushed out this morning. These guys had someone out within two hours and did a great job for $150. Would use them again.
