Re: Cost of CAMs
I think charlie was getting at, just spend the time / money on a turbo and get far more than 10 hp.

Dan,
Regarding your comment about the Tighe cams. Did you realise they are 10.16mm lift?

Though some upgrades (like ECU) lead to what you'd need anyway for a turbo - so nothing lost in that regard.

Re: Cost of CAMs
perhaps there were no NA8 turbo's which rules them out of CAMS 2F....
Looking for an SVT motor for this:

I think what charlie is saying is what I said, if your going to throw in some cams.... Put real ones in, solid lifters, and rev it to th moon.

Re: Cost of CAMs
For the sake of discussion what do you consider "real".
Obviously actual or planned mods like port work and compression will make a difference to desired cam size as will degree of "drives like stock in traffic" desired.

Re: Cost of CAMs
260degree and 10 mm lift is a start.
There NO reason these wont still drive nice in traffic.
Its just that it doesnt matter what size you go, cost is the same, so why choose a 10hp gain when you can have 25 and there will be little to no negatives.
The drivability thing is really rubbish. I reckon it comes from kids putting little cams in cars with no ecu.

Dann, that much lift would require solid lifters right? This adds $300 by the time you buy the shims and solid litters etc.
Oh, and yes I'm aware you probably sourced yours for half a used newspaper, but dumb folks like me go direct to stores selling them, and that seems to be the going price - ergo the point of this thread.

Re: Cost of CAMs
Many mx5s come standard with solid lifters, also, theres no reason you cant source a set of stock solid lifters from another model and fit them, ie.. Go to your local rod/race shop, and ask what they have available for a mazda B6 if you have a 86, and you might be surprised when they say they have some 323/familia lifters aftermarket for 100 bucks a set.

Yeah, but you really shouldn't do that on HLA - the fluid just can't react that quick with such steep ramp up/down.

Re: Cost of CAMs
Sorry if bumping this thread is bad, but its quite a good thread... except for being about as clear as mud.
I can't tell if I'm missing something... but it seems like I got to the end of the thread and I thought I was following.. then I wasn't.
Is it, or is it not ok to use the NA8 stock cams with a solid lifter setup?
Should not use Tighe cams (or similar profile cams) like Pcmx5 has with HLA?
Is the answer to this thread that as long as you've got an ECU sorted, hell yes you should straight swap reground NA8 cams and gogogo?

Re: Cost of CAMs
Tighe and others make cams to suit hydraulic lifters. So if you get one of those then yes swap it in and go.

Re: Cost of CAMs
I'm just bumping this post because it has some great info in it.
Can anyone tell me what the maximum lift is before mods on the head are required?
The valve guides on Patchy have been ground from its previous life in production sports. I've had cams fitted with 8.9mm lift
But if the cams I'm looking for don't turn up. The closest 272 duration cams have 10mm lift......
And yes before anyone says head work, research, ECU & so on. I'm in the process. And will talk to a pro before I take the step.
I'm just curious will 10 mm lift clear a standard B6 head?

Re: Cost of CAMs
Yes, you can run standard HLA NA8 cams with solids. However, standard NA8 cams are not designed to run any lifter to cam clearance.
A solid lifter is set up with clearance to allow for differential expansion in the valvetrain (usually around 0.008" to 0.010"). As such, the cam to drive it has an introductory ramp that is long and slowly changing, to pick up the mass of the valvetrain gently.
An HLA cam does not provide this "soft pickup". The cam will run, but it might end up beating on the valvetrain pretty hard. I'm not sure whether it would do damage but I wouldn't risk it as the fix is cheap enough...
