This must be a worldwide formula.

When I was in the US, I replaced my windscreen wipers just prior to a service (2 weeks to be exact) and was shocked to see that I'd been billed for new wipers.
After arguing with them about this, because I could not produce a receipt for my original wiper blades to prove it (who keeps a receipt for wiper blades?), I took it on the chin and never went back.
I did take great pleasure every 6 months when they called me to remind me that a service was due and I related my previous experience with them, pointing out how could I possibly trust them to service my car when they couldn't even tell the difference between brand new wiper blades and ones that needed replacing.

I disagree with it as well, my wipers get changed maybe once a year?
I just leave them until they suck, then change.

Dealerships tend to do it as a combination of "customer service" (many unthinking customers look and say "oh you did my wipers, thank you") and also for a few extra dollars.

$5 wipers with 5mins labour become $30 wipers and half an hour.

Same as the "paint protection" which is usually just a coat of sealant on the paint, it's good stuff don't get me wrong, but the cost they charge is far in excess of what it would cost to just buy a tub yourself.

Another one is "air con sanitiser" which usually consists of the car being idled with the AC on full and recirc while the apprentice sprays Glen20 (or similar) into the vents.

Of course, every dealer is different, but those are a few that I know occur moderately often.

I wouldn't consider 13 services in a day to be particularly out there, especially for a dealership servicing modern cars (so basic stuff, not things like timing belts, clutches etc)

in an 8 hour day with an hour lunch break that allows 53 minutes per car.
Most dealership services (ie: the car is basically new) are just an oil change, wipers, and plug in the computer.

Drive the car in and onto the hoist.
Lift it up, drain oil, remove filter.
screw on new filter, replace sump plug.
lower hoist, fill oil
get apprentice to replace wipers while you plug in the computer, check/clear codes
back car out of workshop into lot.
grab next car.

You can do that in 50minutes fairly simply, sure you arent exactly slacking, but it's fairly easily doable. especially with a hoist and air tools on hand.
I'd agree. Most dealerships have 3 maybe 4 hoists.

So with 3 hoists. It would take 1h50m per car to service 13 cars in an 8 hours day. That is about 50 minutes more per car than anyone needs.

Per my post, that allows 30mins per car.

Which for basic services like of most new cars is certainly feasible.

Sure, they wouldn't be standing around checking their phone every few minutes, but it easily doable.

also, most dealers have a few apprentices or a shophand who does little things to help save time. So while the mechanic does the oil they're changing wipers or checking tyres.

Especially with dealers where all the cars are similar so you don't even need to look for tools to fit bolts, you just know "14mm spanner for that, 18 for that, 5litres oil,etc

Dealerships tend to operate on a McDonald's style assembly line method when it comes to a service. That's where their main income is, so it's in their interest to pump through as many cars as possible

Read the posts again. But if you cannot imagine the process in your mind. I'll do a run through on HKS steps:-

start
drive car 1 onto hoist 1, lift car and drop oil.
drive car 2 into hoist 2, lift car and drop oil.
rotate tyres on car 1, check air pressures, replace sump bolt, lower car, plug in diagnostic comms.
rotate tyres on car 2, check air pressures, replace sump bolt, lower car, plug in diagnostic comms.
replace oil car 1, finish diagnostics, run car, replace misc fluids/parts.
replace oil car 2, finish diagnostics, run car, replace misc fluids/parts.
reverse car 1 and park.
reverse car 2 and park.
finish

Two cars done in almost the same time and one. If it takes 60 minutes to do one car, then it takes 80 minutes to do two. As you have replaced idle time (like waiting for draining oil) with other jobs.

I would have to say that I have had almost exclusively poor service from Dealers over 30 or 40 years.
Even in the '70s the local Mazda Dealer would bill me for oil filters that had never been changed (I knew that because I marked them)
I don't even want to talk about the radiator flushes, brake fluid changes and air filter replacements that didn't happen.
I stopped using Dealers decades ago and have used a backyard mechanic ever since.
I would rather pay the same money with an independent mechanic because I have some 'comeback' if I am dissatisfied whereas with a Dealer you just get a heap of mumbo-jumbo and nobody to hold to account.
No Dealer services for me.

Dealers have a number of things in their favour. One is that many are covered by the Manufacturers guarnatees and systems. My local Toyota dealer is a very impressive workshop and it is run on Toyota systems. Many privateers just run sloppy shops and no systems at all. You cannot run a top class repair / service organisation without having the systems regulated including documentation. Dealers are sometimes more expensive because they carry higher overheads. Take a look at the top mechanics busiinesses- clean, - you are not presented with a 5 year old calendar on the wall and cars half finished or old projects in the workshop. All for finding a repairer that you trust and does the right thing by their customers. Dealers get business also because they know specific models and of course warranty. Many guys will tell you that some of the modern Euro cars have special equipment which is not available to the generalist repairers. If you have fixed price servicing on a new car then you are better to go to the dealer. Dealers are far more concerned today with reputation and head office giving them a servie except maybe VW who seem to have an odd ethical approach.

Love dealers "service" who else can charge $20 for work shop consumables that's 10 kg of rags  and dispose of waste $20 for 5liters of oil they get picked up free
My once Subaru dealer charged 17 minutes to adjust my clutch pedal when I confronted the manager and pointed out it was a auto and refused to pay for the $760 service as I didn't trust them his reply was ok we will do it all again to what I replied you don't trust your own people

PS I didn't pay 8)

I like it less now than when it was released. I dont think it's a serious tourer- too small. I agree with others who remarked that it appeals to younger buyers.
