I plan on driving the Lions Road sometime in the coming month(s), but in the opposite direction.

FWIW, on your planned trip I recommend you take the road north out of Murwillumbah to Currumbin, via Tomewin.

https://www.google.com.au/maps/dir/Murwillumbah+NSW+2484/-28.1463607,153.4790268/@-28.2198972,153.3174934,12z/data=!4m19!4m18!1m15!1m1!1s0x6b90efc7cba2ece1:0x50609b490442aa0!2m2!1d153.3958572!2d-28.3269383!3m4!1m2!1d153.3747486!2d-28.2531112!3s0x6b90e4c3b8735c2f:0xc82d325729b3556b!3m4!1m2!1d153.4761982!2d-28.1412872!3s0x6b910222d8126c27:0x7767a740b713c793!1m0!3e0

From memory (I measured it once, long ago) a section of the road over the range there has 110 corners in about 10 km

Thanks Guys,

I think that direction needs to be taken into account, I've never been that way.

So, a few more takers would be nice so a meeting point can be arranged.
I'd better add, you don't have to be in a 5.

Phoe and I have dríven down it from Rathdowney before, so we're happy to drive up it from Wiangaree this time... and I like LiteIsRite's suggestion... the route so far is here.

Need somewhere reasonable to meet along the Pac... preferably with coffee.

Yeah, I would have liked to come along, even if only for the Elanora - Murwillumbah - Kyogle stretch, but Monday isn't a public holiday in NSW.

Have fun!

Think we could be up for this. [weather forecast is not looking good though]

Looking like a 380km minimum trip, all up for us.
The section from Mount Warning to Innisplain (including the Lions Rd) will be completely new to me (approx 130km) 8) and I haven't done the Currumbin Valley/Murwillumbah bit in years (and probably was then in a Daewoo Matiz  ).

NSW not having the May Day holiday could be good for us (except LiteIsRite), once past the Gold Coast. More options for lunch in Kyogle?

Seems a shame to head all that way down and not have a quick look at the Ocean.
I'd quite like to add on the little run down Bilinga, Coolangatta to Point Danger Lookout (depending on holiday traffic). If no-one else is interested in that then I'd try and get down there a bit earlier and then join up with you around Elanora / Currumbin Creek?.

What's the plan for times?

The showers have been near the coast, so hopefully it stays that way.

I was going to suggest Coffee the cafes (Street Corner Espresso) on the Lower Gold Coast Hwy at the corner of Deodar Dr. Burleigh as there is more parking.
https://goo.gl/maps/MYuCTjW815t They have been open on previous holidays.
It would be a little diversion along Reedy Creek Rd from the motor way.

Then head inland on the route posted/suggested by LifeIsRite and Slugdub.

Or just get on with it and meet at an easy to find McDonalds 8:30-8.45am.
(The Pines Shopping Centre; Cnr & K.P. McGrath Drive Guineas Creek Rd, Guineas Creek Rd, Elanora QLD )

MXO005 might that give you enough time depending on where your coming from.

Sorry Phoe; completely missed the start time you suggested in your original post.

I'm not really a coffee person so happy to meet at The Pines around 8.30am/8.45am ready for 'the off'.
Will still try and get down to Point Danger before then but if I'm running late I'll just make a quick detour to Palm Beach beforehand.

Whereis.com says the trip from Elanora to Kyogle is about an hour and a half. So unless we want to make a couple of stops on the way (Murwillumbah, Clarrie Hall Dam ?) it looks like we'd be in Kyogle too early for lunch (Commercial Hotel opens at 11.30am).

Next realistic lunch stop looks like Beaudesert? Or a little detour to Rathdowney Hotel?

I'd like to stop and have a look at The Border Loop / Cougal Spiral which is actually on the Lions Road.
Any other lookouts, waterfalls or short walks anyone knows about or recommends?

Happy to just wing it but would prefer to have some idea of lunch time/location for my navigator/DJ :D

I'm happy with an open plan. Some stops would be great. I've seen the boarder loop a number of times. It is never in clear sight, but I try every time.
We can sell out options when we meet if you like.

8:30 at the pines would suit me.
Lunch is nice, I'd like a plan for lunch before 1pm if we can make it work.
Happy with a quick run down the summerland way to make lunch work out if
That is suitable.

It's a bit far to queen Mary falls, maybe we'll plan another.

Just to save you looking it up... BOM predicts the following weather for Monday on the Tweed:

Partly cloudy. Medium (50%) chance of showers, most likely in the afternoon and evening. The chance of a thunderstorm. Light winds. Overnight temperatures falling to around 17 with daytime temperatures reaching the high 20s.

All good points Ian... I think Kyogle sounds like the best best for lunch, so lets perhaps just make for a later start time, so we can arrive there between 11:30-12. Shall we say 9:30am at The Pines?

I like the idea of a brief check out of Point Danger as well, so we could do that and then we'll definitely be in Kyogle around lunchtime :D
