Re: A NB8B Turbo progress.
that mesh over the mouth is probably inhibiting some airflow.

well yes no argument but the mesh pales to the restriction the ic and ac rad pose... 1-2mm of mesh vs 50mm of ic/ac rad

Love this car, good work Ian!
Watched the nitro Dann part 1 vid and enjoyed watching your body language and listening to the sounds and hook up ability of your machine. Looking forward to seeing more

I'm working on track bonnet with venting as it was getting hot, I saw 108deg after the first 4 laps of each session.
Was that the water temp from the ECU display?
Nice work on the ducting, I've been looking at some great ducting threads over at the mazda-speed.com forums and will tackle this as well soon.
Nothing worse than looking at the temp gauge more than the track!

Re: A NB8B Turbo progress.
Hey Thanks Speed! Yes Roadrunner the temps was from the megasquirt ecu showing on the tablet gauges. Since that extra undertray addition its dropped everyday driving temps by 3 degrees on average.
While I was troubleshooting and AC problem, which turned out to be the mS3 turned off air con after the hot temps seen at the track, I looked at "fan"settings to find I had the fans being told to stop working when throttle was over 80%...well that's not going to help any.
Fans (duel) now set to run till 105% of tps.
Fitting a new soft top this week... instructions are rubbish!

Re: A NB8B Turbo progress.
That's an interesting feature on the MS.
Perhaps those more in the know may be able to answer, but wouldn't that be a good thing having the fans off at speed? (assuming full throttle your moving at a decent speed).
Ideally the fans are there for when you are stopped or moving slowly to help pull air through the radiator, but at speed (especially on track) the air flow through the mouth will be significantly more than what the fans can pull and I imagine the fans become more of a hindrance in air flow than a help. I've seen plenty of dedicated race cars without fans at all for this reason.
Would having the fans turned on constantly on the track at speed potentially have a stalling effect on the air moving through the radiator? Or do they just become free spinning windmills spinning faster than the fan motor anyway?
I wonder if its possible to set the fans to turn off when speed is over 110kph?

Yeah having the fans on at speed is only useful in a handful of spectacularly rare cases.

Re: A NB8B Turbo progress.
Ordered a soft top from Mark Rob at Prestige Tops www.prestigetops.com.au... he had the best price by far for a mohair with demister glass. I'd drooled over the audi and porsche softtops, sooo soft and luxurious...this is the closet thing to them. Hartz Stayfast Canvas. I paid $887 delivered, not much more than a vinyl...
Thanks to Lachlan we made quick progress stripping the old vinyl top off and back to the frame.
Then window is what I have been nursing with silicone for 12 months...
Then it was time to watch some video's and use the very basic supplied instructions ( first timer wants to be spoon fed ).
Slowly...
Then it's done, very happy...like had trouble sleeping I was so happy with it after a late night finish.
Pics from this am after the water test...

Good points... got me thinking. Not sure that I can turn off the fans over a certain speed, just throttle position. The car runs at steady state 93-95deg on the freeway at 10% throttle so maybe its just not getting enough air... I have a little more sealing up of the mouth to do and then the vents in the spare bonnet... its all got to help.

What temperature is your thermostat?
Is it a 93* thermostat?

Re: A NB8B Turbo progress.
89 at the front is probably 93 at the rear where the sensor is.
If you want cooler highway temps run a lower temp thermostat or a reroute.

I thought previous experience (Roadrunner, but I could be mistaken) had found the coolant was actually hotter at the thermostat exit point to the radiator than at the back of the engine where the factory temp sensor is located.
Ian, what was the source of the temp reading?
Factory sensor via the MS or aftermarket sensor located where?
Are you using the Tridon high flow thermostat?

Just an observation but it's the 110-120deg potential I'm wanting to sort out on laps 5 onwards...
Do you think a reroute is in order Dann?
