2016 Wellpro Mazda MX-5 Challenge.
We built it and they came..... by the dozen! Prodsports Queensland is proud to announce the 2016 Wellpro Mx-5 Challenge at Lakeside Park on Saturday May 14.
Over 24 race prepped versions of the world's most popular roadster will swarm into the exciting Queensland circuit and many more are expected to perch on the hill to watch the fun and games. Whilst some mock the diminutive Mazda as a show piece commonly found in the Stefan staff car park, those in the know appreciate the breadth of its talents and its ability to churn out some impressive lap times, especially in turbo charged form.
There will be mix of seasoned campaigners and debutants and a wide range of car configurations and degrees of modification on show.
All - out track cars with built engines, slicks and Porsche budgets will square off against mildly warmed over streeters pieced together on beer money.
Expected to be at the front of the pack are the turbo cars of Brendan Whittaker, John Prefontaine and Steve McLellan, all set to go well below 58 seconds. Veteran MX-5 drivers Brian Ferrabee and Henri Van Roden will no doubt be nostalgic as this event harks back to the early days of Production sports car racing in Queensland where the mighty Mazda was the sole choice of scores of weekend racers. Presently there are about 10 MX-5s that compete regularly in the Queensland Prodsports calendar, and the likes of Gavin Clay, Tony Ross, Paul Ansell, James Hay, Tim Wallace ,Angelo Servodio, Tim Janke, David Smith and Cameron Hein will be out for some close racing.
The club is thrilled to welcome first time racers and not so regular competitors into what we hope to build as a more frequent event. Once the newcomers get their first taste of racing there is little doubt they will be back for more. Shane Freese and Danny Karlsson will make their debut after acquiring some well known quick cars, and showing good pace in pre season testing.
Regular mx-5 club sprinters including Shane Plohl, Francois Siebrits, Sonke Hatje, Grant Slender and Aaron Wemyss will be trading places in what is expected to be a fantastic display of competition and camaraderie.
For this event, the classes will be divided into 4 different lap time groupings. If a competitor goes faster than the grouping allows on any given lap, they are bumped up into the next category. Simple. There will be a qualifying session followed by 3 races.
Class A < 59
Class B 59 < 62
Class C 62 < 65
Class D 65 +

Just home from an awesome day at Lakeside!!

Watched four categories, HQ's, Gemini's, Hyundai Excel Cup and of course the MX-5's

Wow! Sheer power and brilliant driving! I did count 25 cars in the first race but the guys that stepped up for the day did a fantastic job! GSlender [Grant], Sonke, Francoism Shane and Chefie all performed above what I'd say were expectations

Nice to see Chris Gough bring the 'Targa Racing' NC up from Sydney and today dríven by Tony Bonanno

Fastest was Brendan Whittaker down into the 57's, John Pefontaine 58's both 2B cars

Well done to all, I am unable to attend tomorrow otherwise you would know where to find me!
