Washing your race suit.

Hey guys I have a triple layer nomex suit that I want to clean. The suit has no washing instructions on its tags etc.

I've done a little searching but come up with no definate answer.

How do you guys look after your own race kit?

I got a wash bag with my Sparco suit which I've used to wash mine (Velcro attached to avoid it scraping any of the suit while it's in the wash).

Sparco recommend dry cleaning as the preferred option but I felt more comfortable washing it myself so I could control the process.

I've always dry cleaned mine or cold hand wash and dry in the sun.

Or as I generally don't wear it other than when on the track I don't wash it that often as it doesn't get that stinky.....

Dropped into revolution in the way home. Picked up a bottle of molecule wash. He did say though that they should really be dry cleaned. However cold hand wash and dry out of direct sunlight was his instructions otherwise. My machine has a hand wash setting :lol:

Speedway is a big sport in my town and the local dry cleaner does a lot of race suits. He says there are some special precautions. It's pretty cheap.

I'd suggest you just ring around your local dry cleaners to see if any of them know about cleaning them.

Best option is dry clean second is cold wash in Johnston's Baby Shampoo as it's neutral PH and wont effect the flame resistance properties of the suit .

A bit off topic but kind of related - is it ok to buy a 2nd hand 3 layer suit? Do they degrade fairly quickly?

Washing guide.

On a 2nd hand suit provided it is in good condition (no rips) then no issues. Also have a look at the 'tag' to see if it is FIA approved if you are going to use it in a CAMS event.

Difficult question as it depends on the event type and what the scrutineers would accept.

For example a set of boots that I have does not have FIA approval but does have SFI. At WTAC the SFI boots were not approved for use but at Noosa Hill climb they were. Interesting because in clubsprint class the requirement was non-flammable clothing extending from neck to wrist to ankles (apparel of nylon or similar material is forbidden).

I think it will be a LOOONG way off until I compete in the WTAC or similar events lol.
The sprints and club events at say QR and Likeside wouldn't fall under the '2.1 race' regs would they? Would be closer to the 2.2 or 2.5 regs?

No issue for QR/Lakeside (sprints/general practice) or club days (QR/Lakeside/Morgan Park).

So I popped into the dry cleaners who could decipher the hieroglyphics on the tag of my suit. Do not dry clean! Cold machine or hand wash only.
Easy done.
