While all good points Mr Morlock, Billy has said that while not a painted by trade he has painted a few cars.
And that the gun is good quality, and worked well with his compressor, which is about the same size as most home garage compressors.

Also the main point, the gun is $55

The paint shop I use to get my stuff from also sells guns etc, and while they are all good quality they are also costly and often require a far larger compressor than most home users would have access to.
The main reason being that specialist paint shops are mainly selling to professionals, and the gear they sell is aimed to that market.

Where supercheap etc are aiming to hobbyists.

I have no doubt that a $500 spray gun and a $1500 compressor would be able to do the job of painting a car far easier, and with less time at the end in sanding/polishing.
But for someone doing the job at home (and only once), spending $2,000 on the equipment would likely be better spent having a professional do the whole job.

The gun above looks to be a nice enough unit (I had a look at one in the shop the other day), and while certainly not suitable for professional use, it looks more than capable of most home tasks, like painting a new bumper bar, or a hardtop, etc.

High quality equipment is lovely, and better for the job, but it's also a matter of value to the person using it.

Why empty the pockets to get a Rolls Royce to go to the shops in when you can get the Hyundai instead and have money leftover for groceries?

Looks like my comments might have been misinterpreted. Auto paint shops do sell affordable spray guns and they do know all about painting and equipment. You get proper advice from the pros and always smart to tell them what you want to do. I was advised to stay with a full sized siphon gun and not go with a HVLP gun- the siphon gun ( Sprayquip) cost $95 .Also that gun comes with different set ups so you can apply enamels and spray putty. A touch up gun with gravity feed is not the same i.e. it does not require heaps of air but a bigger gun uses more. The key points are check that the gun suits your equipment. Hope my points are of some value.

Mr M, not overlooked just OTT for this thread. $55 and a decent enough job full stop.

I've also painted cars with a cheap compressor. Turned out fine ;)

well how many complete spays have I done. let me see at least 40 cars. is my spraying any good -well I wouldn't pay any silly price to have it done so it's passable nothing more. I've seen $10K jobs that rust through a few years later. you have no idea the shortcuts they will throw to get you in and out and grab your cash.
the top coating is not the hard part of the job to do it's the hours of prep. but I will say it again I would not hesitate to spray a full car with this gun :lol:

and I might get my chance too!
they couldn't even match my original white so now I've sprayed it on -its a different colour white .... :roll:

no doubt while its at nitro's some-one will pick it up :lol:

now I know a bit about gravity feed guns - I've also smashed a couple of them too :lol:

if you don't keep your eye on the job and it gets low and your spraying away a big panel and it sucks in air - the party is over and your work is covered in splatter and you are in a highly excitable mode and almost into depression.
i had 2 gravity feed guns laying about before this task. sometimes you get what you pay for and this time i thought more. i even asked the wife would she like me to spray the brick work on the house....just joking!
anyway we had had a bit of a laugh and the choice to buy is yours but if nitro dann has my car running as smooth as that gun... i will be extremely happy.
plus i am only running a very small compressor. if i turbo charged the compressor - i could paint two cars at once...lol

forgot to mention you can buy that compressor and gun for $300 and paint the whole car - not as quick but not as pricey. go back 20 years and I sprayed my mustang with a vacuum style black and decker gun.
that car was on carsales about 5 years back and still has the same paint job.
my son in qld paid a paint shop $17K to paint his gtr torana. I never said anything...but the boy should be flogged!...lol paint shops really take care of you/money

I;m assuming the main issue with the smaller compressors like that (mine is similar) is that you need to stop after every panel or so and let it refill?

I know with the sandblasting cabinet at home I get maybe 30secs of blasting before having to wait a minute or so and let the compressor refill.

HKS that is right. If the compressor will not deliver enough air i.e. to match the gun it will run just about continuously. Today you can buy an 8cfm or 10 cfm compressor for not much money. A good compressor will last a very long time and its a useful addition to any garage. A mate has a sandblaster and an 8cfm compressor and he reckons its good for small parts but will not cope with big items i.e. not enough air. I have a small die grinder and 8cfm is not enough to run the grinder without the comp running almost without stop.

I have an excellent book on "How to Paint Your Car on a Budget" author is Pat Ganahl and its great read and full of useful info for any diy folks. The advice given in the book is borne out by talking to pro painters. The types of guns and paints etc are all covered.

Top body restorations can take 250 hours so a $20,000 paint and resto just for a body is not unusual.

true the compressor has to catch up at times but you know the most annoying part of painting any car bits or a full re-spray...dust or dirt or anything blown onto the target area and after that everything else is minor.
it won't matter if you have the best compressor or gun money can buy if you have not got a totally clean environment to spray its a complete rub out or put up with what problems arise :roll:

I was lucky to find about 50 mils of the original paint from my re-spray a few years ago. the bonnet got pretty scuffed from the northern territory trip with that bonnet bra.
two days back I pulled the bonnet and rubbed out the clear coat to the white base. after that I hit it with the white acrylic with the $55 special gun and then clear coated it.gave it 24 hours or a bit more to dry/cure and did the polish today.sure I have regrets...lol if only i'd found it earlier.
I usually hand cut a car and that takes hours but I've had shoulder problems so I bought the supercheap special polisher/cutter. I think $99 and the end results show on that bonnet. now you might think I am a tight ass but its not the case.
my usual purchase go something like -if I buy it regardless of price and it doesn't perform I usually smash it! on one bad day that's exactly what happened to one of my rolex watches...lol but not my best one!
I highly recommend that polisher and the gun for $150 in total and your good to go.i think it will be the best $ you spend.

ohhhh nice. Although I consider myself a bit gun when it comes to rattle cans but Ive not come across this thread. Ive had disastrous results with compressor & gun paint job in the past I may have to have a go at this.

what size tank do you have?

That filter costs more then the gun. I've just used a water separator. How about you Billy?

I will load a few photos. lets say for $500 in total you could buy all you need to spray a car. plus you could do a pretty good job too. lets re-phase that I could spray a full car inside and out. reason I say that other will say this is unit is too small or so on.

back in the early '90's the very first cars i sprayed was a 67 hr holden followed by a 66 mustang and then a Datsun 2000 sports that was with a super beaver spray gun I think. like a vacuum cleaner with a paint bottle.

then I bought a genuine xygt falcon and the stripe had faded on the bonnet and I gave it a matte black work over too :lol:

so you really can spray a car with anything....it just takes a bit longer
