Re: From Mexie ... to MXSE ...
Yeah maybe I just don't go into it all as much as I use to and missed a whole heap of stuff others find obvious ...
At least the photos I used in the thread are copies placed in a separate "thread" photos folder on my hard drive, so I know which ones were used. Just need to work out how to put them all back ... but that's for another day ;)
Getting off that depressing subject and back to the car ... I haven't dríven it much last couple of months, but since fixing the waste gate and removing the mbc it's interesting how nice a car it is! I do still have the larger injectors with the BEGi CAI, but now I have an idea how much just a CAI on these things makes a difference! The issues with over boosting would no doubt have been the seized waste gate (thanks again Lokiel!) so at some stage I'll fit the mbc back in and do some runs with some extra boost, because the power loss without it is noticeable, but it's also nice at the moment being legal under the bonnet. But that didn't worry me before Christmas and that was only the second time I've been checked in over 40 years, so I don't reckon it'll last ... ;)
Probably the one other item I'd like to add now would be the FM (or similar) downpipe. Would that be too much and likely to stuff up my driveability on the stock ecu that I currently have? I need to make this consideration as it will still be a while working on the necessary official "enjoy the rest of my life" permission to drop it in to Nitro

If you add all your text from each post into a MS Word Doc, each new post as a new page in that document AND then add in your photos within each post, i'll upload them and readd them here for you. Just don't expect it to happen overnight.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Re: From Mexie ... to MXSE ...
Kev, if it's going to Dann eventually, don't worry about the FM DP. If you're not having Dann build the engine or swap the turbo, then you could consider getting his turbo back exhaust - think of it as a down payment on the complete package. However, if you're going to swap the turbo this is a bit pointless as at least the DP section will need to be redone.
I'm also working on the "necessary official "enjoy the rest of my life" permission to drop it in to Nitro", for me a this stage it'll be ECU, injectors, boost and tune + a few ancilliaries. I have his CAI and turbo back exhaust, but I haven't done injectors or MBC at this stage. The sound is great and the power is decent, the driveability is so-so and I have to avoid WOT runs as the power hump is quite violent in 3rd & 4th - it feels like it could be doing damage when it comes on.
I think the combination of all the pieces (CAI, turbo back & MBC) will make you/me hate the ECU and the driving experience, so I reckon hang back on the final peice untill you get an ECU to manage it. That's my plan

Re: From Mexie ... to MXSE ...
I'm with ManiacLachy regarding the FM downpipe, especially if you plan to upgrade the turbo in the future anyway.
The PO of my car had already installed the FM downpipe and I bought the rest of the FM 2.5" MSM exhaust in a Group Buy so saved US$100 on it. Unfortunately the S&H was almost as much as the purchase price - exhausts are large and FM S&H is hideously expensive (guaranteed to arrive safely though).
ie. The FM downpipe is expensive, will be expensive to ship and the low Aussie dollar will make it even more expensive. I reckon NitroDann could make it for 30-40% of that cost and still be happy with the profit.
If you upgrade the turbo you'll need another downpipe anyway.
I drove my car with the AEM CAI, FM 2.5" exhaust, 305cc injectors and 12psi boost for a couple of years and was never really happy with it until it was warmed up. The OEM ECU just can't cope over ~140rwkw so you really should upgrade the ECU before adding a larger exhaust if your car already has a CAI and you've bumped the boost to 10psi or more (that'll net you around ~135rwkw where the stock ECU is reasonably happy with).

Another vote to get it all done by Dann. His 3 inch systems are surprisingly quiet too!
That's what I'm planning once further along in my NA6. ;)

Re: From Mexie ... to MXSE ...
Thanks guys ... I actually hadn't considered the difference should I upgrade the turbo as well.
I am currently finding the car really nice to drive with the stock boost and just the Injectors and CAI. I can put the MBC back in any time I want for a little more and probably without upsetting the driveability much. Any further than that and, like most, I wouldn't be happy with the way it drives anymore.
I need to gain some patience and just enjoy the car until I'm ready to do everything properly! Slow learner here ...
Thanks Dave. You must be sick of fixing my mistakes by now Definitely wouldn't expect it done in any hurry, I know how busy you are. It'll take me a while from this end as well

Keep this in mind Kev

These manifolds/dumps are bulletproof and will never crack.
Good for 220rwkw with Dann's 3' SP exhaust. Thats stupid power for a street car but its a lot of fun. Just add rods and a ECU.
Richard.

So Richard ... I'll come past & pick up that "unneeded" spare manifold off you on my way to Nitro's later this year .......

I know I thanked Dave in the last post, but after a couple more emails pestering him with even more changes, I just wanted to acknowledge the effort he puts into this forum and also in fixing my thread.
Thanks mate!

shhhhh or everyone else will send me 205 images to retrospectively insert into their threads
Us SE owners need to stick together, it's obviously the best MX-5 to modify.

Re: From Mexie ... to MXSE ...
Finally got around to fitting the eBay intercooler that I purchased back in December last year
Bit scary taking the front bumper off for the first time. I used this "how to" thread from Mazda-Speed.com. Interestingly, the slide bracket/clip thingy on the passenger side fender was missing! Looks like the bumper has been off before.
Pretty ugly really with it's mask peeled off ...
But looks better now ...
and all back together ...
Yeah, it's a bit hidden by the grill, but after seeing the damage to the grille from rocks and stuff following our trip to Canberra last year, I'd rather have it there.

Is the core 550 x 140?
Still deciding on a size for my NA. Thanks
