Yeah I realise it's what the organisers deem to be worth $1000 not the actual costs.
Still I think we can get away with less than $500 in actual costs for a running car (ex cage and other safety). The car won't be pretty so I think it will look like it's worth less than $1000, and probably is.
The only "freebee" of worth would be the 5-speed gearbox... everything else is actually purchased from 3rd parties (chassis, engine) or worth basically $0 anyway, ie Na6 open diff, axles...
For reference, some of the cars entered in Wakefield 24h of LeMons were: 05 Mazda 3, Falcon EL, Excel, 98 Celica, 94 Swift GTI, 99 Pulsar, 96 Magna, Peugeot 306, 97 BMW E36, 97 Falcon XF etc etc...
The winning car being a 05 Mazda 3.... I doubt you would find one for less than $4000 on Gumtree.

I think you have to prove (somehow) that you bought it legitimately for $999 or less... so if you bought a wrecked Mazda 3 for $500 and then fixed it (depending on your skills that might be possible) then that's ok... but if the gearbox is commonly had for $500 and you're stating you got the car "gifted for free" then you might come unstuck.
I guess if only 10 people show interest then they're not going to turn you away... but still, rules not all that clear.

Nearly March now, anyone in WA still keen on this? If so, should be talking/planning/spannering.

Re: 24 hours of LeMons - Collie WA
I know from mates that ran in the Wakefield event that the $999 car cost rule was largely overlooked, and certainly not policed. Many of the cars were worth much much more and given no penalties. A number of guys were running reasonable well sorted track day cars.
IMO the promoter is about the $$ and will let anyone enter a single long as they pay... the entry fees should be half the price - do the math on weekday track rental and work it out.
Cheers.
