Not Xidas, these are the original AST dual adjustable 5200 shocks which were the same as the first gen Xidas. I picked them up cheap second hand... The only issue is I only have the rear pair and pricing the fronts to match is prohibitively expensive. Even the non dual adjustables come out over $2k. So I'm running my old pair of Cusco Zero2's up front. I have no idea if the combination even works yet, I'll figure that out in a couple of weeks at the next event.

Ahh, I wasnt aware AST made the 5200's outside of the Xidas.

Learn something new everyday. Depends on the valving and spring rates of the cuscos I guess.

yeah, I didn't know either until I saw them on the forum for sale. I was planning on getting the 4100's for the front to match... maybe later in the year.

I've reduced the spring rates on the ASTs down from 550 lb to 425 lb and increased the spring rate on the Cuscos from 350 to 700 lb. The Cuscos are adjustable so I've dialed them up to max as a starting point, with the AST's being a bit softer. Hopefully the Cuscos will keep up. I'm not exactly sure what a mixed shock setup does, but the back of a MX5 is more important to me anyway, and the extra droop from the ASTs in the rear should help with keeping the inside wheel down. The torsen has been slipping a lot when I load the car up in bends... if I can fix that I'll save a stack of time at most of my courses. I can't see it being any worse than my old set up but we'll see.

Runners are approx 180mm on the top edge. The head angles back at around 10deg. The manifold itself the sits up between 10-12deg... so the combined angle from the flange to where the plenum seperates I estimate @ 21 degrees. I need to take it off the car to get it more accurate.

Not MX5 related but check out the boot of my dad's Mini Cooper S. I just spent the night making AN lines to plumb it all up.

It's running a "long range" single Cooper S fuel tank on the passenger side, inline filter and surge pump, then surge tank with the main pump. He's running e85 with a cross flow aluminum head with ITB's and fuel injection. Sounds awesome!

Looks good. Did he look at put in a drivers side tank? I know my brothers SS had the dual tanks and had a range of 800-900km.

We need some external shoots. :)

Looks great, and I love the old Minis to death, but gotta say, that makes me nervous. All those fuel and electrical connections, petrol, and handy battery to provide a spark just when it is (not) needed ... :shock:

I'm sure it will be all right, just me being a nervous Nellie :lol:

It has two fillers... just one tank. It's designed like that to get the weight low and on the passenger side. Dad has been responsible for around 10 fully rebuilt and restored Coopers of various ages all of them set up just as they came off the factory. You can probably spot a few shells in the background of my photos waiting for their return to glory.

This car has been built to have fun at sprints. One day it will be returned to stock too.

Here are a couple of shots of the engine. It's just had a refresh. I'll upload a shot of it in the engine bay with the ITBs installed.

The head is a cross flow 7 port, with the two middle cylinders siamesed into a single central exhaust port. You can get race 8 port heads but the are very rare. This engine is dynoing at over 100whp which is pretty good for an A-series engine.

The rest of the car is immaculate with a full cage and race seat. It's great fun to drive but damn it's scarey under brakes. It dances all over the road and because you sit in it like a bus driver it takes a little to get used too.

I owned an identical looking Mini. Even down to the colours. Mine had 2 tanks and 2 Monza fillers.
I've got a similar fuel set up in the boot of my 5. Fuel smell is bad with that style of braided line, unless it is teflon lined.

The lines are teflon because of the E85. Eventually I'll d something similar in my MX5. Maybe no surge tank but dual pumps and filters.

If I went back to a Mini, I would put a modern motor into it. Swift motors were done.

The 1275 you see in the pic I posted was built in 1999 by rover ;)

I'm going for a cooper s replica, so stock/period looking is a must.

Have seen a swift motor crafted onto a mini gear box but it's just a waste in my opinion, especially as the engine/gear oil is shared.

A work mate has a toyota starlet turbo motor (and gearbox) putting out some good numbers but that thing is a death trap for many reasons.

Bruce, you know the deal, sometimes its just too over the top.

My uncle has installed a Honda b16 engine in a square nose. It has heaps of power but the steering geometry was atrocious. The entire front end has been rebuilt to fit in custom control arms of the correct length. The car was quick but lethal... hopefully now it will be controllable.

There is another mini running a Yamaha bike engine. It's quick when its going but never finishes an event.

For me you need to stick to the original block otherwise you may as well go all-out with a spaceframe and super light body because any more power than 120whp and the factory suspension / steering / brakes become the limiting factor.

For reference, my father in laws Cooper S appendix J racecar has a similar lap time as me at Barbagallo... thats fairly quick for a 1963 1.3liter FWD.
