Have just caught up with this thread. Christine certainly has been though a bit over the years.

I can relate to having issues and then just leaving the car for a while before I figure out how to fix.

You've done well and appear to have learnt a bit over the years. Good work!

If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Recently started cleaning the underside of the bonnet
Before .... Or half way through it

And now
Image
Those with a keen eye will also notice the cam covers , windscreen wipers & tier tower strud brace have also been cleaned up a little
With the strud brace instead of polishing it I decided to sand it with some very fine emory paper to give it that satin look.

It was also time to attend to some rust.
The windscreen pillar had some rust . I thought it was just a little surface rust But when I peeled back the rubber seal my heart sunk a little . No pics. I was too distressed
Here is how it looked after I had probed it a little with a screwdriver .... Image
But after getting to it with a brush it didn't look so bad anymore .....phew.
Image
Image
It was then treated with rust converter
& a coat of primer. Next week I might get to it with some putty to smooth it out a littleImage

Some deal with the footwell
ImageImage
That's been treated with rust converter , covered with putty & primer. Good thing I got it before there was a hole in it.
But still needs to be sanded back & get some classic red paint over it.

Journey continues.
Image
Rust spots sorted & painted . The end result . I also painted the windscreen pillar red. Years ago I painted it black.
It's back to classic red now.

That's how she looks now.
Image

I also repainted part of the rear quarter panel. But didn't do a very good job of masking. I could kick myself.
Image

I also have 1 rust spot which need professional attention
It's beneath the Frankenstein bolts. It's too big to fill it with filler.
The other thing I discovered one of the bolts of the seats has come off its weld.
The bolt is not coming loose it just turns. But it's holding the seat. No urgency but I'd does need to be looked at as I can't remove the seat.
Seat is getting shabby. It's going to have to come out sooner or later to be changed.

It's all about getting her reasonably close to what she used to be. In the days I had a serious driving passion.
She's always been a dirty road warrior . I've never had the funds to make her a garage queen with all the good mods.
It's more about making the best out of the little I have to make her go well & get that passion back. If I manage 1/10 th of that passion I used to have. It will make me a happy man.

Patchy's Fawlty Towers risk management. Enter at own risk

Postby StanTheMan » Mon Feb 08, 2016 12:00 pm

Took Patchy for its first extended drive in a loooong time.
Bucks weekend down at Bendalong point. About 60k's past Nowra for those who don't know. It has one of the best mechanical surf breaks around. Since the buck & most of his mates are keen surfers.....that where we went.
Image

For those with a keen eye can spot my roady bike ....but ts not about the bike.

It was all about driving patchy. Rid her off those terrible cobwebs.

Driving on the main road was OK but doesn't really do much for the cobwebs as I cruise around 2800rpm in 5th. it would get to just under 5000 rpm if I change to 3rd.So some twisty roads had to be found. On the way down the only real exiting bit was the 3min section just past Kiama on the coast. But Saturday morning I took off to Kangaroo Valley for some cycling & driving.
Pure joy. We all know Mx5 needs RPM & corners. My preference is uphill as my balls have shrunk in my old age.
Moss vale road was just the place. Just after Nowra heading towards Fitzroy falls through KV. (Kangaroo Valley) Up the Barrengarry Mountain as there was virtually no traffic. The joy keeping RPM between 5500-6500 around corners , feeling the LSD doing its work at the back . The nose going where its pointed. Arse firmly planted in the seat , the decibel opera from the back & the whole body enjoying the experience.
No I wasn't driving like i stole it. Probably a far less aggressive than in the old days but it was such a joy.
Then after turning around at Fitzroy Falls drove patchy back to the bottom of the valley. I then cycled up Mt Barengarry. Then drove back to our camping spot Just loving it.

The wish list for patchy is cams, Bling bar & some serious barely legal street tires. It is some time off. but that's where she's going. Current tires have about 10 years of tread left if I keep driving like i
Image

And no strippers. But lots of alcohol & sensational food, driving & cycling One of my Brothers mates is a chef. OMG!!!!!

*just so you know, the alcohol stamina was saved for Saturday night.
*disclaimer. No unnecessary brain cells were killed on Friday night and were under controlled conditions.

Mmmmmm...... There could be some hrs invested into this.
Image

It used to be Crome plated. But with age, abuse & lack of love it started peeling off a few years ago.
Got sanded back with wet & dry. Attempted to get that satin look. But then polished it with some polish I found. That metal polish should do a real good job of it.....
