brisbane windscreen replacement

hi,
my NB8B screen is cracked(trucks need bigger mudflaps).
google search led to Boost cruise forum that recommended Platinum windscreens.
he quoted about $260 including a new rubber fitted at my work.
i was wondering if anyone recently has had one fitted so i know if the price is about right.
i dont care what brand it is so long as there is a warranty.

on line quotes are a pain to get so just thought i would ask here first.

my insurance cover does not include windscreens....cheers

Not really a helpful reply, as i dont know anyone who've replaced theirs, but all i can say is don't ignore "budget" operators. Years ago i rang around all businesses nearby and decided on one who gave me the most specific detail for the windscreen of my GTiR (has a sun-shade strip at the top of windscreen and slightly different mirror mount). Guy rocks up in a van that's looks like its been in the wars but turns out he's been at it for over 15years. Fitted it in less than 10mins. 6years and counting, no leaks or any flaws.
Business name was Economy Windscreens.
Can't recall price exactly but pretty sure it was less than $180

That's about right. I'm getting a screen done tomorrow by obriens in Brisbane. I think it was 220 or 240 plus the mouldings for an aftermarket.

Genuine from Mazda was 950ish.

For the mx5? Your insurer doesnt have free annual windscreen replacement in your policy? I would take full advantage and get genuine mazda (if they actually do make them).
I had to pay out of pocket as it was something that needed fixing prior to getting a RWC, otherwise i would have chased down genuine OEM.

Insurance will only cover aftermarket, not sure how rocky managed to pull a genuine one out of Shannon's.

Mazda do still have them in Japan, just have to wait and pay the extra $700

Hang on... So say you get a choice of a $100 aftermarket item or a $150 genuine OEM, Shannons will always skimp and get you the cheaper non-genuine item?

That doesn't sound right, especially if the component is a significant safety issue, which windscreens obviously are.

I would give them another call.
Makes me want to call them as well as to me it's a bit of a breach of duty of care to not provide you with the best option.

Say your car has major ( repairable) damage...surely shannons won't ring around and find the cheapest and therefore potentially dodgiest repairer, they'll go to a tried and true shop.

They're subject to Australian Design Standards, aren't they? From an insurer's point of view, the cheapest that meets Australian Standards would be meeting duty of care.

Given how actively involved in driving tyres are as opposed to the passive nature of windscreens, and that insurers don't replace tyres, I don't think your analogy works.

It all depends on your policy. Having worked in insurance in one of my previous lives, the old rule of insurance is you take the money, and then you hand as little of it as possible back, If the terms allow the insurer to source a non-OEM windscreen that is Australian Standards compliant, then they will do exactly that. What is satisfactory to the customer is irrelevant to the insurer, from the their point of view they have fulfilled their contractual and legal obligations.

Would I personally prefer an OEM windscreen? If it's demonstrably better than the proposed aftermarket, of course!

They were happy to pay the same amount towards a genuine unit if I wanted genuine but wouldn't spring for it.

I suspect the gap was $50 they could have been persuaded but 300% more was too far.

New screens in, looks ok though I haven't dríven the car yet and I've got $700 to cover most of my track fees for the year.

It must be just me.... But I can't quite understand this statement.
I understand the term "track fees" and $700 is going toward paying for it, yes I get that...., but that one word: "my"....

One has to actually GO on the track in order to incur aforementioned track fees though, right?
