Same here most of the time. If it wasn't one of the blitz periods, and a combination RBT / Drugs / Roadworthy, I doubt most of the stuff would even be questioned unless one is doing something stupid (in which case it's deserved). These officers were pretty relaxed in their attitudes and very conversational, quite interested and complimentary about the car actually. I was kinda disappointed that they even noticed the mbc. I hadn't tried to really hide it, but I did think it was tucked away nicely ...

It stands out more in this photo than it did in reality. I usually had to point it out to people.

Haha ... yeah I agree! I'm still learning what does what - and even the correct terminology!

Last night I did some quick reading on the hose length from the TBI to mbc to wastegate that I'd mentioned before and found out that it can make a difference. So I'll be trying the mbc in the hoses that I have fitted on there now and see if there's any change to how it felt or responded before. Maybe that was also having some effect on the wastegate not working properly before as well.

From driving it since fitting the stock solenoid back on, I'm noticing slower turbo response, I presume from the wastegate bleeding more at lower boost than it did compared to the restricted pressure flow from the ball & spring that's fitted in the Turbosmart mbc stopping it opening at the lower pressures.

Of course boost controllers are illegal - altering boost can change emissions (to outside legal limits).
BOV venting to atmosphere can also alter emissions (and possibly be too loud). Recirculated BOV back into the inlet is fine. The inlet system needs to be a closed loop, not venting.

OK ... writing this while enjoying some local South Australian Shiraz and watching the AUS vs India T20, so hope it makes sense :shock:

While checking a couple of things under the bonnet yesterday, I decided to take a look at the insulation I'd added to the BEGi intake box to quieten the blow off noise a little. Even when the insulation had first arrived, I was worried it might start to "powder" ... and yup, it had :? Teach me for going eBay cheapo, and teach me for even using it! Should have known better :evil:

Anyway, Adelaide's weather had finally eased up on the heat a little, so as I was taking things apart, I decided this would also be a good time to modify the air filter box with a removable lid. I had already decided I'd be doing this before ordering it, however due to my lack of fabrication skills, I needed the time to get use to the fear of totally stuffing it all up ...

First job was to remove the offending gunk and give it a good clean up. Soaked it with plenty of WD40 and Degreaser and scrubbing it off with a kitchen scourer seemed to work best (the missing paint was from past removals/installs) ...

Before removing the intake box, I'd spent time drawing up a template of the lid shape that I wanted. I used this template to transfer the shape I wanted onto some aluminum sheet that I had purchased, allowing for folds ...

Next up was cut it out and carefully grind the curves into shape. Many test fits later ...

Now to the bending. I'd purchased a bending brake off ebay (can be seen in background of photo) for the job in the hopes I could get some neat bends, as using vice/hammer bends just never seem to work out. Did not imagine how hard this stuff is to bend, or the complexity of a couple of the bends that would test my newly found, err, skills ... :roll: ...

As more edges became curved, the bending brake wasn't useable, so with the knowledge of how the bending brake works, I used some imagination to create a couple of the last bends ...

By the time I'd had enough for the day, I was pretty pleased with what I'd created ...

So that's where it finished up yesterday. Today being Australia Day, other stuff took priority, plus I didn't want to annoy neighbours with cutting & grinding noises. Hopefully, back onto it tomorrow ...

Looks good, that's one mod i've been considering.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

BEGi filter box lid mod Part 2 ...

This morning it was time to take a big breath and cut the filter box and stop wondering why I paid extra for powder coating ... :?

I'd had different thoughts on how to do this - cut the complete lid off, or leave a lip around the edge. I decided the extra support of a lip around the edge would be better, so went with that. This meant that the welds would be left and these were interfering with the fitment of the lid, so they'd need grinding down.

This is how it looked after the first cut and some grinding ...

With the welds flattened out, the lid now sat properly and I was able to trace the cutout around the filter hole and cut that ...

Next up was clamp the lid in place and drill the holes for the retainers ...

Also with the lid clamped on properly, I could see areas where I wanted to do some shaping ...

I'd purchased a cheap Rivnut type kit off ebay for this job. Drilled out the holes in the box to suit the nuts I'd be using and then found out just how wimpy my arm strength is trying to compress the rivnuts :frown: Managed to get there in the end ... :mrgreen: ...

Time for some test fitting. First fit showed it to be a bit tight, so after several in/outs and some careful adjustment grinds it fitted with some tolerance around the edges ...

I also ground back around the air con piping ...

Happy with the fitment, it was time for finishing touches - filing and smoothing the edges, grinds, curves etc. Then once all of this looked ok, it was time to paint everything ....

... and that's where it stands for today. As I have to go to my son's place tomorrow and re-wire his trailer for him, the paint should get time to cure nicely before I start to fit it all in.

Nice work - you've definitely got the "fabbing bug" now, can't wait to see your next project.

Try and source some black bolts if you can for the lid, once you torque them down you'll scratch up the paint on the bolt heads.

Thanks Okibi & Lokiel. Kinda pleased with myself on this one :mrgreen: No way I would have considered trying something like this a couple of years ago. Gives me some confidence for when I get around to fitting the intercooler that I've had sitting around for a while.

I've coated a few other bolts under the bonnet, but they don't get used, so I just had to be careful fitting them. These will be on/off so although the paint dries pretty hard, as you mention, it won't last.

Fantastic work! I've been wanting an isolation box for my intake, but I don't even have the Begi as a starting point. Nor the tools/skills/time :oops:

Research more flush fasteners. DZUS ones may be too big.

ManiacLachy I have the tools you could use on dodgy day to make something similar all you will need is the sheet metal/aluminium ...

I think I'll focus on the brake lines this time, but I might take you up on that in the future, thanks :beer:

No probs, need the cardboard for the templates as well. Have rivets and rivnuts in the toolbox as well.

Without the box to start with, I doubt I'd have embarked on this either! I just made sure that I didn't stuff up the existing box until I had fabricated the lid enough that I knew I could use it. Still scary though considering the original cost of the BEGi !!

Wish I'd known about those before I started, they look perfect. Button head bolts will probably suffice. I'll see what Bunnings has on the weekend.
