NC - Custom Carpet under half cage?

So I just got a roll bar welded into my car due to issues with the Brown Davis not fitting under the roll bar and I think I want to carpet the rear of the car since it looks a bit ghetto for a street car with bare metal and welds in the back.

I was originally thinking about getting an auto trimmer to do it but I called a couple of places, dropped in to see one and the prices were more than I wanted to spend so I was thinking of doing it myself.

I've done some research (this thread provided some inspiration http://www.mgexp.com/phorum/read.php?1,1624878) and it seems like the DIY'ers who do van conversions, custom interior trims and custom sub boxes seem to use unbacked carpet like this http://www.daleys.com.au/products/view/209 which has some stretch, liner to blunt things like bolts and contact adhesive to stick it down.

Obviously it's a bit of work in mocking it up, cutting and then fitting.. has anyone done anything like this before? Any tips or advice?

Dan, I'd just use the stock carpet and cut it up. I'm sure you'd be able to find stock NCs getting wrecked or converted into race cars.

Unfortunately the rear shelf of the NC is plastic which needs to be removed to fit the cage.

They did a good job on the super20. At first look I thought they made custom panels but possibly some of them were reused factory ones, I should go and look at all the plastic trim pieces I have in storage..

Contact Mania / Deckers / MX5 plus to see what panels they have...get them, cut up the worst ones and try it from there.

Yeh I spoke to Deckers about getting some trim panels a while ago.

Still interested in any tips for carpeting the back though.

Alternatively, get carpet from Bunnings and cut to shape using stock trim panels. Trim the carpet it fit around the cage, and use the same fastening holes as stock trim panels...I wouldn't glue anything onto the body work apart from maybe self adhesive Velcro applied to certain areas to get the "shape".

So I ended up doing the carpet tonight, I was dreading doing it thinking it was going to be a complete clusterfuck but it ended up being pretty easy and only took a couple of hours.

I got carpet from Bunnings which cost just over $70 for 2mx2m and I trimmed the carpet while it was in the car with scissors and a stanley knife without even pulling the seats out.

I did the carpeting in 3 pieces, one big piece in the middle and then I did the sides separately so the carpet wouldn't be pulled in too many directions and fold up. To my suprise the carpet draped like I wanted it to, at the front I cut the carpet so it tucks into the center console section and then behind the chairs, since the carpet is black it blends in.

Like Apu suggested instead of glueing it down like I originally planned, I ended up just using the bolt holes that are up the top (normally used for the soft top) to position the carpet and I only used double sided tape around the sides to keep it centred and connect the pieces.

It's not perfect but I'm really happy with the final result and I think the interior looks much better with the carpet in.

Ignore Bunnings its a car not a kitchen. You can buy automotive carpet. Its not hard to cut patterns but the carpet will need to be edged.

I'm sure a better job could of been done, I couldn't find a reference point for someone who had carpeted this area before or guides that showed how to conform carpet to strange shapes like this area without glueing as was discussed in this thread so I thought the job I did was decent for carpet that is removable.

I got a couple of PM's on the US forums asking how I did it when I posted photos so it seems like others haven't seen it done before either as easy as it is. I posted up 'how to' there and now someone else did it basically the same as I did it so if you have some more detail on how to do it better I'm sure people would benefit from it
