I think it's mostly this.

When people pay new car prices they expect to get the same stuff as the other models so it doesnt seem like less value.

I think it's also partly to do with all the advertising and stuff about how rear cameras are a safety thing etc since a few people backed over their kids.
Basically, I agree with you that it's not necessary since you cna just look behind, and as for low things well... check first beforehand.
But it's not helped by manufacturers designing cars with such monsterous blind spots these days.

I don't have a rear view camera or parking distance detectors in any of our cars - and I can't see out the back of any of them (Mazda6 hatch, MX-5 or BMW E36 sedan) from the driver's seat. They could all do with a camera or parking distance detection.

Thanks for the advice No Giggles Stiff Neck Shorty. But I have dríven one a few times. With the top down, I can reverse it without an issue. Lots of clear view vision. With the top up, the plastic rear shield makes the job a little more difficult. Have to rely on the side mirror on those occasions.

Let me correct my statement "....I can't see the back (end, rear most protusion) of any of them..." I also doubt that I, or anyone else, would be able to see a small or low object, like a child, directly behind any of those cars from the driver's seat.

Your statement would be correct. But arguing you cannot see the rear most protusion of you car is a mute point. I'd guess every car you have dríven in you life you have had the same issue. Every driver in the past 100 years has had the same issue. You really needed to explain that to adults and/or fellow drivers? I would've just taken it for granted you cannot see below the line of the boot or glass window.

Situations like explained rarely do happen. So it is a luxury to have a reverse camera. And it is a luxury we are just used to now in today's modern cars. Even if we don't really need them.

I'm sure someone posted that earlier. Gone around in a full circle and back at the same point. haha

Since camera have only been around for a while, and you have been driving of 40+ years. I'd like to ask how many children or objects you have backed into in your driving history? PM me if you embarrassed to post publicly.

I also like to add just in case someone isn't reading my post about camera properly or I didn't express myself correctly:- Is a reverse camera required on a ND, or is it a luxury we are just used to nowadays. I'm not for or against. And I'm not having a go at anyone that does think they need it. I personally think the car is small enough to not need it. But I do have full mobility in my skeletal functions to save me. Others may require assistance.

More fatuous arguments. Oh and it's "moot" not "mute". Reverse cameras should be, and no doubt in the near future will be, fitted to all new cars as an essential safety item.

I agree with others that the genuine (Australian market?) camera fitment to the ND looks a bit povo.

Just because you disagree with someone else's statement does not make them fatuous.

You are the only poster to mention safety in the past 2 pages relating to cameras other than myself. If you need it for safety, then yes get it. If you need it for the luxury of having it cos your last car had one. Then refer back to my suggested "fatuous" points. But if you need it due to decreases of muscle and skeletal function, that is a safety issue as well while driving. As I originally "fatuously" posted. And if anyone reading does not have a decrease of muscle or skeletal function, then don't get hung up about what I originally "fatuously" posted.

WORD of the DAY: fatuous

adjective: fatuous

silly and pointless.
"a fatuous comment"
synonyms: silly, foolish, stupid, inane, nonsensical, childish, puerile, infantile, idiotic, brainless, mindless, vacuous, imbecilic, asinine, witless, empty-headed, hare-brained;

I learn something every day from this forum!
(I also HATE it when people sat "mute" when they mean "moot", or spell "loose/loosing" when they mean "lose/losing").

It is a loosing battle on community forums these days. The spelling is shocking. And the lack of spell checking before hitting the post button is out of control. :lol:

Just in case anyone didn't know, I sell new Mazdas for a living, so I'm kinda biased.

But It does seem strange to me that MX-5s, especially ones with MZD, don't have a reverse camera as standard, and if you add one it looks like a piece of Meccano.

Naturally, I have a Cunning Solution. PM me for details.
UK since return: Standard NC2 (horrid), C200K, ND2 BBR, NC2 BBR200 (loved it), NC BBR300 (better than BARMY), V-Special, turbo NB8B (my 84th car)

Oh the irony - spell checker wouldn't have caught that though.

@davekmoore

Given you sell Mazdas.....I have a simple question

Is the camera in question a Mazda(factory) supplied product?

I believe it wasn't factory fitted but added later by the dealer....perhaps using a non factory product???
You can't demand respect....you have to earn it
NA8 for Fun, CX5 for carrying crap...;)
