That would also help protect the lens from rain/dirt as well as making it stand out less.

... just like this one from Rev9 ... http://rev9autosport.com/mazda-backup-camera.html - clicking on the small image under the main photo brings up a low res image of the camera installed. Looks much better than what Mazda has done.

Mr Morlock wrote:Seriously its a non issue seems a bit crazy that people are checking out your rear end camera! Perhaps the camera is adjustable so enclosing it in a housing may interfere with that.

As far as function goes, it's a non issue.
However, for me (and presumably others, since the topic came up) when you purchase a brand new car you expect the factory fitted options to at least look integrated and professionally installed.

To me this camera looks far from integrated (I would swear it's a generic kit from the local autobarn) and the installation looks like a quick job with some double sided tape.

To put it another way, if you ordered a new car from Mazda and took up the optional extra of "handsfree phone kit" you would likely be very disappointed if you collected the car only to see that they had superglued a cheap $2 phone holder to the dashboard. rather than an neatly integrated item as seen in overseas brochures.

See, that looks like a factory install to me.

Also, does that one fold up into the bodywork? it looks like it might be hinged and tuck away?

Ridiculous that there's even two types of camera being installed for different countries! The cheap looking unit fitted to AU cars is an eye sore for a modern car. Not a good move by Mazda ...

I have heard of cases where dealerships offer "dealer fitted" options instead of the manufacturer made option. (not talking Mazda here)

Sometimes it's as simple as the manufacturer not offering that component in Australia, other times it's that the dealership can make a few more dollars on the non-genuine unit.

The ND one sounds like the former, which is a shame.

My 2 cents worth on the reverse camera on the ND, being a ND GT owner the damn camera should have been on the car in the first place seeing the GT is marketed as the flagship car ....damn even the Mazda 3 Max , CX3 CX5 and so on have it as standard on the car .....and some of these cars are close to half the price.
I contacted Mazda Australia when I got the car in August and was told they did think it strange not being included as well, there marketing reply was .traditionally sports cars do not have reverse cameras .......my reply was .....traditionally sports cars don't have a 7 inch MZD screen either !
It does seem like a committee decided on what to put in the GT, could have done without tire pressure sensors or the heated seats (QLD) for that matter.
Anyway .......very happy with the car and yes I have had other MX5's .

Mark

p.s. Note to future ND owners ......check your tire pressures after picking up the car ....mine were 39psi all round and a friends were 45 to 50 psi
ND 1.5 GT - Off the shelf ...standard .......nothing done !
NA6 - Much the same

This rear vision camera talk has got me in giggles. Drive around with the top down 75% of the time. Car is minute compared to anything else exampled with a reverse camera. Seriously, if you cannot turn your head and see over the boot in this car, then you have muscle and skeletal issues and probably shouldn't be driving anyway.

You would definitely have to be capable of some weird contortions and/or be excessively long in the torso to be able to see over the boot of an ND from the driver's seat.

Do you need to over it or just past it?

I must be just old skool. Know what is behind you. Look over your shoulder. Reverse. I understand in a big FWD where the back glass is 150cm off the ground. But the boot on a ND is like 75cm-ish off the ground. Or maybe just a luxury we are just used to in today's modern cars?
