Wing supports
Hi
I just bought a wing from fleabay and am after some good ideas for holding it up
The legs it came with aren't high enough so I need to extend them or make some new higher ones
I don't want anything outrages just want the wing about level with the roof
It's a race car only so function before beauty
and I don't have a CNC but I can weld sort of
Any good ideas appreciated

Looks like the same support was used on each wing.
Do not underestimate the forces involved with a properly designed wing. A APR GTC-200 can produce up to 118kg of downforce at 190 kmh (without a gurney flap) at 10° AOA . Add at gurney flap at the same speed and it increases to 172 kg at 8° AOA. Interestingly the GTC-200 still produces downforce of 60kg at 130 kmh when set to -2° AOC.
I'm using the Miata version of the APR GTC-200 which has mounts designed that put it on the outside edge of the boot. Over time there is a bend forming in the boot, I will take some shots on the weekend to explain.
As yours is a 2D wing it would need to be mounted in clear air to work efficiently. Height will put even more forces on the mount. Also what class are you running in as, at least for 2B there is limitations on the height a wing can be off the body. Also end plates are an important element of wing design/efficiency. In my opinion the end plates for yours are not suitable for your application.
Are you after downforce in high speed corners (Turn 1 Eastern Creek)? Do you have a front splitter to balance out the rear wing at high speeds?

Magpie and Zossy are on the money, mounting that wing in that fashion will take some thought and effort. It needs to be compliant with the regs you run under, handle the DF and drag loads it will generate (in turn, determined by car performance, airfoil performance and the AoA of the wing), and to be balanced by the front aero so handling is not affected excessively. Note, it is a lot easier to get rear aero performance than at the front so you need to start thinking now about what you might do there.
The boot lid is probably not sufficiently strong to mount a decently performing wing unless strengthened, however (and I am not trying to be snarky) that is an ebay wing and may not be at the cutting edge ... I have seen extensions used between the wing and those mounts to lift those/similar wings higher.
If you are getting serious about racecar aero you will probably want to eventually) replace that wing with one that is more efficient (in lift/drag terms) so you will be wanting to mount something that generates big loads on the rear of the car. greenMachine thanks for the link on the GTC250 wing on MT. The mount is exactly what I'm looking for. I may flick them an email to see if the mount can be used with my 200 wing!

I'm just about to get some new CNC wing supports made for my car. I made a mistake when I sent the CAD off to be cut and supplied the 'lightened' version instead of solid. The design is basically the same as the Singular ones but mine don't place the wing as far rearward. The very back of the wing is in line with the back center of the bumper which is a requirement in several CAMS classes. They bolt into the rain channel in the boot via some nutserts. Very easy and quick to remove and you can still open the boot a bit. My existing supports work great but they are just a little flimsy and if I run them I'm expecting to pull into the pits looking like the photos further up in the thread... or worse, end up in the wall.
You can only run this style of wing support on the GTC wings with the correct spacings on the mounting points. I doubt your ebay wing would work like this.

these failed where the lightening cut-outs span the width.
if you make new ones or attach extensions it is better to have nested triangulated cut-outs so as not to leave a wide open gap.

Based on the picture the OP posted before it looks like the wing is one of these (same design, possibly different width) http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Universal-Li ... SwMmBVr1H-
Since it's aluminium rather than carbon I'd think that would make it much easier to move the mounting points towards the edge of the boot or to make it fit a specific rear mount.

I ordered an APR GTC-200 last week in the NC specific fitment. I wonder if it will do the same to the NC which has an aluminium boot lid.

I designed the endplates halfway between the design Ryan from Singular did and a Mercedes car I used for reference. I emailed Ryan and asked if it was ok to use his design. He is a DIY guy at heart and loved my 3D printed wing so he had no issue with it.
The supports were done 6 months prior to Singular releasing theirs... I think any wing designer would come up with a similar design for a MX5 anyway. the only strong mount point is the rail channel anyway.

Dan it looks like 949 are no longer making the Specmiata version of the GTC 200 that I have

Read the thread for Ryan's response to my questions. By all means contact him, but those mounts are too high (IMHO) and too far back. He also failed to reply on the extent of adjustability and issues around car rake. Ryan has been very helpful to me and I am sure he will respond helpfully to others.

I have gone in a different direction, inspired by 949 - I use the bumper/crash structure. This can be done two ways - through the top of the rear fenders (see Danny's NC) or where the bumper bolts up (my method, a la 949).
What regs are you running Rick, if they are 3D/Sports sedan based, you should be able to go back 100mm behind the bumper - that wing looks very like a 3D wing (400 chord max, 1600 wide). Also, those open supports are very draggy.
