Re: Anyone swayed by a CONVERTIBLE Mustang?
I helped my son buy a 2004 V6 Stang in Florida earlier this year. That was a pretty interesting experience since we were scanning private sale cars across the Florida Panhandle, Alabama and Georgia. Half the ads had confederate flags in the pics. More than a few of them had gun holders bolted to the underside of the steering column - apparently an easily reached handgun is a pretty sensible accessory for top down in those parts. Not one car had a service history, although maybe about 20% had actually had regular servicing. Inspecting a car over Skype is surprisingly doable. We ended up paying about 4k for a really low kms one owner black convertible which is now doing proud duty on the school and shopping runs. In that model they're a good solid reliable car. Gutless though.

I don't like anything about the current Mustang at all- it just seems to reflect that USA has not gone forward in design inside or out for their vehicles in the last 50 years. Ford can do pretty good things out of USA but the home product is another thing. Locally made Fords had some mighty cars but even there they had a tendency to do in your face bulges and stripes etc to prove we can dispense with class.

True, but Ford have read the target market fairly well, and the usual market for large V8 vehicles at a lower cost tends to be the same market that goes for the stripes, bulges, and beer instead of wine.
From what I understand Dodge are doing very well in the USA with their new Charger, and GM similarly with the new Camaro, and both of those cars are anything but subtle.
The main market and appeal of these kind of cars is to dig at the underlying rebel feeling, they by their nature are supposed to be harsh and somewhat obnoxious.
Many people buy these kind of cars, in a way, as a big middle finger to society.
Not all the buyers are like that of course, but from what i've seen/heard of people buying them, that's one of the big markets for them.

Most of the sales in the States are the gutless auto V6s or 4s with no agro stripes or bulges. They're really bought as an affordable basic reliable boulevard 2+2 open top cruiser with no performance pretensions. That might be an interesting market to tap here too. The V8 and bulges market is really pretty limited.

The Ford stripes and bulges are influenced from mopars of the 70s.
I'd go a challenger every day of the week over a mustang.
Or as we say, real muscle vs pony power...
Saying all of that, times change and fuel keeps on getting more expensive.
My priorities have also changed. Now days I'm more concerned with efficiencies and putting power to the ground.
For many many reasons, think my next car will be a golf R.

I love the Mustang and the whole 60s ethos captured in its retro styling.
Agree, the Dodge is the best looking of the three retro revivals. Not released here by Chrysler and not built as a convertible even in USA.

In August 2015, Chrysler revealed their new Cuda convertible. No idea if planned to come down under.
Although not a convertible, I'd still be interested to know how their 4WD challengers go.
Anyways, apologies for going off topic.
Ps please pass on my regards to the rest of the cast from M*A*S*H

Haha well said.
The sixties - if you can remember them; you weren't really there.
Guess a lot of the retro appeal is directed to cashed up boomers. The Mustang stared us in the face for half a century. Now they're available without ADR worries, Customs, shipping and tariff problems. I hear the indicator stalk is correctly positioned also.
No more dodgey conversions, wipers going the wrong way or headlights that dip incorrectly.
Guess with mortgages done, Prado lease finalised, school fees and orthodontists done with there is some increased cash flow

Correct the price rise is looming, buying now price protects the car which is handy, and about a 14 month waiting list.

Hired a Mustang convertible for a little drive from Florida to LA next March. Will probably end up being the V6 though, as that's the cheapest to buy.
