OEM tow hook replacement

Postby The Green Goblin » Sat Nov 21, 2015 8:28 pm

Hey guys,

sort of a noob question here, i have purchased an aftermarket tow hook which i will install shortly - its designed to be mounted to the front driver side of car..made of solid steel.

in this case, given the driver side OEM unit will be replaced..can i also remove the OEM passenger side? i.e. does it need to be there if i only have the 1x driver side hook? my preference is to remove it..

the reason why i purhcased the tow hook was combination of aesthetics + to run at SMP (im aware that the OEM hooks are sufficient too), i wanted an aftermarket clearly visible hook. i think it will look cleaner with the 1 hook.

cheers,
Jas.

Should be fine to remove the other one, many cars only come with one from the factory and never heard of them having issues at any track with scrutineers.

For road use it doesnt matter, pretty sure you dont even need any hooks (although useful to have in case you need a tow, but they can always just grab the subframe with the winch if needed)

Not sure if it's true but the subject items I have heard described as tie downs and not designed as tow points.

My understanding is that they are mainly designed for holding the car down on trailers etc (tie points) but are also designed for short distance towing (ie: pulling the car up a trailer ramp, pulling a car from a ditch, etc)

I would expect very few people to actually tow a car any distance using them since i'm pretty sure flat towing isn't legal anyway.
