Plus how much market is there for another spec series in Australia? Having both an 86 and MX5 series would only poach drivers, sponsors and teams from each other and affect the longer term viability of both. Mazda would've seen that Toyota was starting their series and would know there was no point trying to start their MX5 series.

Yeh, the ship has already sailed. Personally I would of liked it to be an MX5 series but it's still cool to see Toyota go ahead with it and showcase a tightly controlled one make series with low hp lightweight cars.

Hopefully Toyota's pockets and the money they have already banked on the 86 will let it last longer than the other support series' that came before it.

I am a massive fan of Spec Miata as a concept. It has been criticised by some on here as a $$$ hole and yes, the cars at the front have big $$ spent on them. But for under $10K you can get a car that has all fresh parts and is less than 0.5sec off the pace. Whilst I love our time based class, the same is not true of the MX5 Cup here (except sometimes in wet conditions).

Im thinking of a class as follows:

* NA/NB/NC cars all permitted.
* Weight controlled parity.
* Stock engine internals - engines checked and sealed by any one of a few reputable builders at low cost (checks for cylinder/chamber volume, compression, inspection of head ports, etc).
* Torsen diff only (or maybe welded to save $$)
* Stock sealed OEM ECU purchased from and held by organisers. Later model cars permitted to use adjustable timing wheel but no other mods allowed.
* Exhaust free.
* Control suspension - say BC BR or MCA Reds - something relatively cheap and good quality, available for both NS/NB and NC.
* Brakes OEM, except for lines, pads and rotors. NA6 allowed to upgrade to NA8 brakes. ABS disabled or removed where fitted.
* 15x7 (NA/NB) or 17x7 (NC) wheels only. Control tyre Yokohama A050 (hopefully at a discount for the series). No wets permitted.
* No aero.

The cars would be cheap to build and run, heaps of fun and the racing would be close.

I could like that quite easily :D

Tyre compound would be specified I presume, and no buffing allowed (penalty for replacing tyres before a set life), tyres individually barcoded. This may seem extreme, but a big spender could get an advantage by always having a set in the sweet spot. If the suggested weight controlled parity extended to individual cars (ie a success penalty), rather than just equalise the different models, this might not be necessary.

:mrgreen:
I never met a horsepower I didn't like (thanks bwob)
