Anybody tried 215/40/17 Federal 595 RSR ?

Postby Daz » Fri Nov 06, 2015 11:47 am

So I am looking for new 17x7's for the SP and new road tyres to go on them. I hardly do any km's or drive in the wet, so happy with very soft tyres if they grip well in dry.

The 205/40/17 size (and 17x7, 4x100 rim for that matter) is really badly represented these days. Choices for the ultra high performance tyres are pretty crap. I never had any issues with my 205/40/17's but I wonder will I get away with 215's as there are more choices like the 595's ?

Hi Daz,

I used to run 215 40 17s on my 17x7 and they fit well on that size. If I was running that size now I would likely use Advan AD08Rs as I have hear a lot of good things about them. A little expenisive with a retail of $277 but you may be able to pick up a deal somewhere.

Cheers

Yeah I saw the AD08R's, but I am guessing it will cost a fair bit more and probably not improve the lap times of my local neighbourhood :)

Can't speak on the 17's specifically but I was very happy with my 15" 595 RSR's. No, they're not the fastest, but for the $100/corner I was paying, really didn't care.

Daz, give Yonas at JDMYard a call. They parallel import the Hankook RS3 and sell them a bit cheaper - I'd rate that a better tyre than the Federal and quieter too.

Doesnt look like the RS3 has a reasonable 17" size for the MX5. Closest is 215/45/17 and thats pretty big.

Local yokohama place said they are on 4-6wk backorder and told me $240. Can get the RS-RR for $165.

Well...17" is big for MX5. What should it run, a 35?

Standard SE tyre was a 205/40/17. Consensus seems to be 215/40/17 scrapes by (maybe literally) and 215/45/17 is going too far.

Satisfied with the RSR in that size for the road. No idea of how they are on the track. Can't beat them when value for money is considered.

You might get a better price from St George Tyres at Arncliffe.

Value for money these tyres are excellent and one of the best kept secrets around.

The rubber is fairly soft and grips well however they are a little soft in the sidewall and you can feel the fronts roll a little on turn in but it does not seem to affect grip level.

Track wise they are good for a street tyre but when I used them they fell off badly after a few heat cycles although that was at EC where turn one is very heavy on tyres.

They seemed to wear quiet well in my case although they get a little noisy when well worn.

OK in the wet but not brilliant.

Considering their softness try and get tyres made this year as then you will feel them at their very best.
