I am no longer Freelance.
7 signed me up again for the year so all equipment is carried in a Truck!!
I missed having a 5 so much and to own my original one is so good.

Nostalgia aside, it is also a really well equipped little beast that I belive has some serious potential.

I wish I could but I am in Studio next week.

Wish it was a weekend club day!

Long Time between updates.

I was not going to keep this thread going but now i have changed my mind as i think it will help me keep track of everything and kind of act like a Giant Whiteboard of things to do.

Since getting this little monster back i have been competing in both the NSW MX5 Club Series in class 5 and the NSW SUPERSPRINT Series in 3A.

After what took what felt like forever  i finally received my new Gen 15x8 Black 6ULs.

Image

I also picked up a Black Hardtop from Mr S.Otten.
You may have seen this HT before on such vehicles as
Image :D :D

Has to be worth a second or 2 surely??

Other than that it is pretty much how my little brother had it set up.
I have not even had it aligned, which has been more than 3 years since that has happened..

The biggest mod i have done for Lap Times has been a Massive weight reduction !!!!
Image

Now seriously this has to be worth some time right??

So far the Rounds have been Awesome!
I am coming 1st in both series in my class and am still only using Yoko AD08R.
Wow they are an awesome tyre.
I will eventually move to a R Spec but for now being competitive and at only $170 a tyre i can not complain.

The highlight so far for me has been RD1 of the SS on the GP Circuit of SMP.
WOW!!
I love that track but it could so easily bite hard!!

I was worried about this event as i had never been on that track and i knew my speeds would be a lot higher than i had ever done.
So my Girl did a super awesome thing.
She booked me an hour on a simulator to do SMP.

Image

Now this thing was not that high tech but just getting familiar with the layout helped SOOOO MUCH.
Seriously, after my first warm up lap i felt confident to push and i only ended up taking off no more than 2 seconds throughout the day.

I asked the guy for a slow car to try too mimic the MX5 and i ended up in old Torana 4 speed.
Funny enough, the gearing was almost spot on and really appreciated what she did.

What i did find on the day and is something that i have noticed at Wakefield is that i get some serious Corner exit oversteer and even Inside wheel Spin.
I am running a Torsen but what i believe is happening is the 16mm rear Bar is too large and is causing the inside wheel to lift.
I will test at the next Club day by going back to the 12mm stock rear bar and doing back to back lap times and see what happens.

I ended up with a 1.56 but the GoPro stopped recording after the 2nd session so here is my messy 1.58 but it shows the rear end issues, plus my ham fisted technique.

There is more going on with the car, especially for next season but i just wanted to get a bit of a log down for me and apologies if i have bored you all!!

You should definitely keep updating this, it's a good read!

People could learn a lot from you, those times are really quick for your car and it's refreshing to read a thread where someone is working more on themselves than the car.

Thanks Dan,
Really appreciate that.

Everytime i go to Wakefield i go quicker so clearly i can improve and working on me is a lot cheaper than adding parts.

Though that is not to say i have not been gathering parts in the garage.

I ripped out a 2002 VVT BP & 6 Speed from a write off.
This will be for next year as i need to finish off this year in my 1600cc class.

Image

This is now on a stand in my garage and will receive all new seals and belts so as to be ready to be dropped in after the season and i will move up to 3B.
"Why Hello there my stupidly fast little Hondas and Lotuses" :|

But i am really looking forward to the extra Torque and pace the BP6D should provide.

I am contemplating swapping the 6 speed in before hand to get the quicker ratios but on with a 4.3 Torsen i have to work out if that will help my peaky cams or all that extra shifting might slow me down??

At the last SS RD at WP after my 3rd run i came in and noticed my muffler basically lying on the ground.
Was very strange.
Somehow the Hangers had snapped at 3 places on the muffler.

Image

I had about 10 mins to run about and come up with a solution to at least get my 4th run in.
I found some old speaker wire, a good fella gave me 2 metal Cable ties and as luck would have it i looked up and noticed a old Coat Hanger in the shed!! BOO YAH!!! :D :D

Image

This got me out there and back home.

A quick trip up to PURE FAB and Suli had me sorted with some extra bracing to boot.
Hopefully this fixes the issue.
He also provided a much stiffer exhaust hanger rubbber to stop the flexing.

GOD I LOVE SEXY FRESH WELDS !!

A skill i must learn one day.

LAST SUNDAY WAS GREAT!!! :P

Really nice cold night in Goulburn with the girl.
Dinner, Milkshakes and not as early a start to the NSW Final club day for the 2014/15 Season!!

Image

Arrived at 730 at Wakey to find a Crazy Line for scrutineering.

Image

Got the car all ready and made it through and was ready for good day at the Track!

Image

I was going to use Race Chrono and a Qstarz for the first time in years to see if i can find how to go quicker.
Image

First session out and just easing into it plus the track temp was FREEZING i was very surprised to see a Optimal of 1.12.33.

Image

Knowing once the sun warms the track a bit we should be in for a awesome day i made sure i was ready for Run 2.
Headed out did a 1.12.9 which was my first time into the 12s and as i pulled back into the garage i noticed steam coming from under the bonnet!!

CRAP!!!!

Reservoir was almost empty.
I had a hard time figuring out where the leak was.
I ended up tracking to what i believe is one of the 2 small Manifold hoses to the Throttle body etc.

I ran back to SuperCheap to grab Distilled water, hose clamps and hose. :DIY:

Got back and tried a fix and made it out for the next session.
It appears i fixed it!
:D

Had a blast running most of the day with a Mitsu Legnum and consistently running in the 12s.
I called it off after Run 4 so we could get back to Sydney at a decent time but man had a good day!!

Finished with a 1.12.58.
And even made it on to the PAGE 1 of the quickest times of the day coming 20th overall which i was very happy with for a 1.6 on S Specs and a dumb ass behind the wheel.

Image

NEXT TIME I WANT 11s !!!!!!!!!!

If that happens then R SPECS!!!!!

Just got back from a 2 Week Production Break!
Got a little too used to not getting up at 5am....

Anyways, I have been busy with car doing 2 more round of the NSW State Supersprints.
Both at SMP.
North Circuit and the GP Circuit.

The North Circuit is a very fast layout that rewards Big HP but i still enjoyed it.
Well i would have enjoyed it more if i had not had ECU issues.

At WOT and above 6500 RPM i felt the power drop away on my first Hot Lap and looked down at the WB and noticed it had gone to around 10:1 AFR.
As i slightly lifted it seemed to be able to be controlled by my right foot, so i learnt to drive the car that way for the day!!!

It is a very strange feeling when going down a straight up to 180km/hr and then diverting some of your attention to the WB Gauge so you can tune the Air/Fuel Ratio with the throttle!!!!
Basically when it starts to slow, lift the throttle and it starts to go again.

Still, i got my laps in and came 2nd in my class.

North Circuit.

From that day i decided to get it looked at by a different tuner.
I went to see MRC DYNO near Castle Hill and spoke with Mark there.
Seemed like a really good guy and we chatted for around an hour.

I brought my laptop and showed him the Tune from Mania on the Adaptronic.
Lots of laughs had until a very worried look on his face which turned serious when he asked about 2 things in particular.
The timing was very high, higher than he had ever seen on a MX5 and there were a couple of settings incorrect which explained a few of the issues i was having.

Also there where Zero safety devices implemented.
No timing Pulled when Temps rose etc etc.

I decided there to book the car in for a full new Tune which would happen a week from then.

Image

First day of my holidays i rocked up at 8am and we converted the car to Sequential Injection.
Then it went on to the Dyno.

Image

It was on the Dyno for around 4 hours with me in the passenger seat the whole time.
I was so happy being able to be a part of the tuning process as others i have been too before do not do this.
We dumped some timing, sorted out a fuel map and then played around to see what we could do to tidy it all up.
Introduced Timing back Cell by Cell, made the power but now with up to 6 degrees less timing the previously there.
Set up a few safety systems, Rev Limits and Idle and called it a day.

It will go back at some point for a check and i have been making notes of anything that i feel could be improved.
So far so good!!!

With the tune now making me more comfortable i headed to SMP GP for Round 4 and WOW!!!!! WHAT A GREAT DAY!!

Picked up my Trophy from Rd1.
Image

First Session the track felt quick and dry.
I decided not to play with the car during the day and just enjoy a good fun Track Day.
I shared a garage with a Radical Supersport and had a great day with its owner.

Image

Ended up with a 1:55.4 which is almost a second and a half faster than my first attempt on that circuit.
Still struggling with my lines i feel and i need to still sort out the inside wheel spin on Turn 2, 5 and 11.
Always the inside Left.
Not sure if it is a too stiff rear sway or maybe Control Arm Bushing Seizing (if that is possible??)

Certainly time to be gained if i can sort traction out.

Still using my AD08s but i feel Rspecs would make a big difference on a circuit like the GP one.

PLEASE RIP MY DRIVING APART!!
I WANT TO GO QUICKER!!!

I am Losing to a bloody 16 year old kid in a Corolla but at least he is sooooooo much faster than me i feel i could never catch up so am happy with 2nd Place.
The bloody rust bucket is doing low 1:49s!!! :D

Looking forward to RD5, again on the GP Circuit.
Hoping to nail a 1:54!!!!

Race Chrono says it is possible.

You've mentioned adaptronic... Did you change over from the MS2?

And how's this VVT swap coming? :D

Yeah changed to the Adaptronic quite a while ago.

The VVT and 6 speed are just sitting waiting :)

Still working out what to do for next year.
May keep in the 1600 class.

I mentioned in the previous post about the last RD on the SMP GP Circuit that RaceChrono said that a 1:54 was possible and that was my aim for RD5.

Very happy to report that i nailed it!!! :D :D

1:54.2

A high 53 is on the cards if i can just put it all together.
Still i am Stoked to take over 1.2 seconds away from my laptime there and i know exactly what did it.

I was suffering inside wheel spin along with mid corner oversteer which really showed its ugly face on the GP circuit at Turns 2, 15 & 18.

I had a thought that it could be that i am running too large of a Rear Sway.
I was running a Whiteline 16mm Rear sway along with the rest of my setup.

I pulled that out and replaced it with the stock 12mm NA6 Sway i found in the deep dark wet corner of my garage.

Did my first warm up lap and pushing the power out of the last turn i instantly knew i was on to a good thing!!!!
Where i had been feathering the throttle and correcting i could almost plant my foot and hold the wheel straight.

Hitting the limiter in 4th coming into Turn 1 scared the crap out of me but the smile across my face would have been visible to all if it was not for my helmet.
I knew that meant i had cracked the 190km/h mark.

I had never been able to get past 185km/h.

Nothing else on the car had been changed besides the Rear bar and i was very happy to see those results.
I will continue to run on the AD08s for South Circuit and Wakefield only to verify if it is truely faster on all 3 tracks.
I am very interested to see the results.

I am coming 1st in points in 3A in the NSW Supersprint Series but with the, "drop a round" system i will loose to a very fast young driver in a Dirty Corolla
16 year old with his Dad as the engineer.
They have a great setup on that car and with his NO FEAR style, and running low 1:49s, they are embarrassing a ton of much much more expensive cars.

I do have a chance though.
He missed RD1 due to a engine failure on the first Hot lap.

I have not missed a RD yet.

If they for some unfortunate reason miss another RD i have a shot!! :D :D

Even with that, i do not mind coming 2nd, 3rd or Last.
Just over halfway though the season and i am having a blast.
I can not praise the AD08s enough.
For less than $600 a set and no sign of wearing out yet they are INCREDIBLE!!

Image

I have just started using Circuit Tools and it is taking a while to understand how to best use it to my advantage but i find it Plain as Day to see in this image how much more drive i am getting out of corners with the Old Sway back in.

Image

You can clearly see how after each corner the Blue Line Steps up.
The blue line is with the Large Rear sway from a few weeks ago.

So each increment up is slower.

South Circuit here we come with the MX5 Club!!

Hoping to do better than my 1:08.6 from last time.

Last weekends INTERSTATE CHALLENGE held at SMP on the South Circuit was a real HOOt!!

Image

Well it was until on my 3rd session i felt the dreaded heavy steering and Tell Tale Smoke in the rear view.

My High Pressure Power steering line had busted clean off at the union to the Pump.
This happend at the first event at wakefield earlier in the year.

Image

I was having a great battle with a Victorian in my class.
He ended up beating me by less than 0.1 of a second!!!!!!

This was the worth Foe.
Image

I finished with a 1:06.7

All in all a great day and can not wait for next year's battle!!

I made it home in time to grab the trusty 626 and return to SMP for the awards night for the 2014-2015 Club Season.

Image

1st place in Class 5 and Fastest Class 5 lap of Wakefield Park.

All in all a great day and a huge thanks to all who helped make it happen.

8 years and lots of Fun Times.
When i first bought her i did not know how to do an Oil change let alone build a High Po Atmo Engine and tune it.

We went from 1.23's at Wakey to 1.12's.

We did well over 120,000ks albeit on a few different Engines.

You went from delightfully Comfy to outlandishly Noisy.

First to last Track day at Wakefield.
