Recommended mods/upgrades?

Postby Jessegroves » Fri Oct 30, 2015 4:14 pm

So I've had my Mx-5 for a couple of months now, and I was just wondering what mods you guys have already done/recommend for an NA?

Mod list so far:

-lower springs
-camber arms
-14x8 Hayashi CR reps
-14x7 Achilles ATR sport tyres
-new rocker cover gasket
-gear and handbrake boots
-Jass performance cup holder surround

Yes most of these mods are cosmetic for the moment [WINKING FACE]

Below are images of my car the day I bought it and around a week ago

What do you want to use the car for?
Daily driver, track car, rally pig, show queen, all would have different mods list..

Also what are YOUR priorities? You could go power mods next, or chassis bracing, or head unit & subwoofers, or cruise control, or recovered seats and dash, or under bonnet bling, the list is endless.

Recommended mods would vary depending on your requirements, budget and priorities, not to mention personal tastes.

I'd love to say get it fully built and slap on a turbo, but if high power isn't a goal and/or you don't have deep pockets, that advice isn't useful to you.

Take a look around at some of the build threads people have done, gleam some ideas from there. The MX-5 has a massive aftermarket, there's stuff for every taste and budget.

welcome to the mad house

get an LSD
depending on Km think about bushes. If its done 150k km.....wouln't worry just yet. 200k km start thinking about it. 300k km.....what are you waiting for?

decide what you want to do with the car.
If you are a hard parker.
Do everything.

If you are a driver.
Get some bolt on performance bits to give you just a bit more go. get the geometry right and its not about getting 4 deg of camber. upgrade the NA6 diff. Get an LSD. My personal preference is a torsen but clutch types have thier merrit too. I would personally loose the tyres & rimms replace them with something which has a little less agressive offset. But that's a personal preference. Certainly make sure you have good sticky tyres. I would make it more sedate to reduce the attention of the boyz in blue. I loved the roll bar I had once upon a time. Regret taking it out.

if you are a racer.....
gawd take everything out to make it the most hektik & loud ride. go hard on engine mods, cams, intake high compression, excaust from front to back whatever. you can get to about 105RWkw. with just bolt on stuff & programmable ECU but you're on your P's right so turbo is out for a little while. She might be a real bitch to drive though.

JDM lover.
looks like you're already there or almost. Get the front & rear lip. loose the antenna & get a stubby one.

Well since it's my road car I don't want to go too far with it while I'm still a provisional driver, I want to do some exterior things but I don't want to be a hard Parker when it's not really races and had a near stock engine...

I would like to eventually get some of the NA limited edition beige interior parts but I don't know where I would source parts in good condition without buying expensive aftermarket parts ..

I'm considering an exhaust system aswell

949 whammy engine with a full NitroDann EFR based low mount on about 30psi.

Flex fuel.

Race port bov.

External wastegate vented out the bonnet.

Apr gt300 wing

Beavis under trays and light year fastback

10" 6ul's with 275 Hoosier A6

That would be a good start.

It looks pretty nice as it is!

My advice would be to save for maintenance items, and then upgrade things when they break or wear. Check your radiator (if it's still plastic tanked, and it's brown, you might need one soon).

When I had my first car, I enjoyed the sound it made, and even more with a nice exhaust. After maintenance, for a car you'll just drive around, a nice exhaust would be my vote!

Dann, you can use my car as the tropical test bed for all that whammy stuff. We just need to find a wealthy patron who'll fund the R&D.

I'd also like a holinger dog gear set while we're trying things out.

Leave it stock and save like a mad man. Then when off you Ps, sell it and buy one already modded. ;)
NA6 turbo - 140kw atw - not the most powerful but so much fun :D

^^^ That's the best way to own a modded car. Work out what you really want. When you find a car with as near to that as possible make sure you get it checked out and that the mods will pass a roadworthy.

It's the sensible way ... but few of us have enough sense ... doing our own mods is soooo much more fun

Yes, but have you watched my painful journey over the last two years?
