Yep, NC has the same issue.

I won't say it's stupid, because it's the first thing I did to ascertain if I was indeed, stupid.

There were no loose anything in the boot and the problem is real!

I contacted Mazda today and the car is booked in for an inspection on Wednesday. They are taking the matter seriously.

The noise is very distinct if you run over the cats eyes in the centre of the road, or over very big pot holes.

And I had two NC's, a Series1 and a Series 2 and neither of those vehicles had this problem, nor made this noise.

No clunks in mine. I've covered 5000km now and that has included lots of rough and pockmarked back roads ... and even 20-30km of dirt road on the way to Crookwell this weekend. No issues ... apart from the first stone chip in the windscreen.

As for the tool kit, I dispensed with the bubble wrap and rolled the kit in a hi-vis vest. The vest serves the same purpose of damping any noise from the kit rattling around, and is also useful in case of roadside emergency.

Wouldn't loose PPF attachments cause clunks/noises when accelerating/decelerating?
If not loose tools etc., then maybe loose brake caliper(s)/components, sway bar(s) or similar.

On the yank forum, they found it was the calipers (mainly the right hand side.)

I'm not too sure, but after a full day at Mazda, on Wednesday, when they re-torqued everything under the car, it's still the same.

Mazda have re-manufactured new calipers, but it's now a matter of getting my hands on some of those.

I may just buy a set of Willwoods or Brembo's, to see if that fixes it.

I would have thought Mazda should rectify it and you would expect them to put a fix into place expeditiously - e.g. air freight their expense to cover customer complaints etc. If you buy non standard products then you can bet that's not part of the warranty. A caliper also can be an expensive piece of kit and a non standard product might not fix it anyway.

No, don't put it on Mazda, and it still wouldn't stop me from buying one.

They have not just brushed me off, they know of the problem and have raised a notice to Mazda for their records, so the fix can be applied and they are aware of potential problems. They also slotted me in immediately to take care of the issue.

I cannot say enough good things about the service centre run by Chris, at Caboolture. Jake's guys have always gone the extra mile, even to the point, with my last NC, (PRHT model with a squeaky roof) of importing a brand new roof and re-installing.

I am confident now, that it is a brake caliper issue and I'll convey those thoughts to the service department next week and see what they say. Mazda have re-engineered a new brake caliper for the LE model in the US (which has the 17 inch wheel and also larger calipers for the larger rotors), so they may well just do the same for the Ozzie model with the smaller caliper.

The problem is not causing any problems with the handling, nor the enjoyment of the vehicle, other than a clunking noise when I run over "cat's eyes" on the road, so I simply avoid them when I can, un til the issue is fixed.

And, as for not buying the car because of this issue, well that's cutting your nose off to spite your face.

When was the last time you saw an MX-5 attract as much attention, world-wide for it's handling, styling, engineering and all-over driving excellence????
The answer is never. I have scoured the net for years looking for news and reviews on this car and can't remember the last time I saw a negative comment by a "real" reviewer about this amazing little vehicle.
Just ask any current owner what they think of their car?

Ok, sales pitch over.....back to my day job, which is living the good life...hahaha

P.S. I have the auto model, but that doesn't have anything to do with the clunk, the yanks have manual and auto models with the issue

First series of any new model (irrespective of brand) has teething issues. Why many people wait until updates. But there's a lot of positives with getting in early and buying a brand new model as well. In most cases, I reckon the positives far outweigh the negatives. When I went to look at and drive the ND, the one huge positive that hit me was the genuine enthusiasm of the salespeople about this car. Usually all they want to do is sell you something, but with this car, we ended up with three salespeople, another couple in looking at a Mazda 3, one of the service department workers who'd come to ask one of the salespeople a question, and me ... all just standing around talking about the car!!

If you apply the brakes lightly does the noise go away?

No, it does not go away.

This issue, although it presents no safety issue with the car, is mildly annoying, but as a new vehicle, it just shouldn't be there.

I'm convinced, after reading about the same issue over on the American forum, that it is a brake caliper issue.
Added to that, I have spoken to a few other ND owners here and they also have the issue, even some of the new vehicles on the show room floor, at one dealership.

The ball is in Mazda's hands, to rectify it, as they have done on some of the cars in the states.

http://www.caradvice.com.au/392889/new- ... an-before/

The new Mazda MX-5 – which launched with a 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine in August – has been a hit with early adopters, with the two-door sports car registering 220 sales in August and a further 97 in September.

Despite the 1.5-litre being more likely to attract a slightly more passive audience than performance buyers waiting for the 2.0-litre, figures so far suggest the MX-5’s buyer demographic is about 66 per cent male, roughly the same as the previous-generation, however the age group has shifted noticeably.

While 80 per cent of previous-generation MX-5 owners were aged above 45, that figure has now dropped to below 60 per cent for the new car, suggesting the car’s fresher and more youthful styling (and it’s considerable price drop) is attracting a younger audience.

It’s also prudent to note that repurchase rates of the new MX-5 are lower than other models in the Mazda range, suggesting the fourth-generation convertible appeals to a new audience, likely those more appreciative of the first- and second-generation MX-5 – which captured the lightweight convertible sports car concept so well – rather than the third-generation which shared its platform with the larger and heavier RX-8 of the time.

Sounds all good for the ND. Lower average age buyer and the buyer is more like new to the MX5.

Roughly 30 pre-orders per week are currently being taken nationally for the higher-output model.

Lots of pre-orders for the 2L model.
