Under 5km would be hard. Most around 9-11km rolling off the transport truck direct from compliancer/importer and around 12-15 after they have had their pre-delivery done (which involves a drive!)

There are different types of demo vehicles too - service loaners are the ones to avoid - they may as well be ex-rentals.

Not to mention that there are schools of thought re: run in periods and styles; you can do more harm than good by running in a vehicle too gently (ref: http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm) - the very same reason you don't want a demo may actually make it a better car; that is - it's been dríven normally, in real world conditions. I doubt most dealer salespeople (at least those who accompany potential customers on test drives) would let the customer thrash the car to within an inch of its life; they want to get home to their family at the end of the day in one piece after all!

I agree lizard, a previous workmate used to work as a dealer mechanic. He always said there is no such thing as an un thrashed car. Full boost / revs / sideways etc all seen during the pre delivery road test. Only way to be close to sure is if you go for the road test with them.
