My obvious question is why was the 'milky' oil found first and then the crack... Was it visually inspected for damage upon delivery? Was it visually inspected when it was packed and then by the transport company? Is there any damage to the pallet it was packed on? Does the damage look fresh? Is there any leaking from the crack?

Mr Morlock will always be Mr Negative and let his imagination run away with his indignation to take umbrage on the forum.

There are 2 issues:
1. Contaminated oil; and
2. Cracked sump.

The contaminated oil question? Has this been resolved to the OP's satisfaction?

The cracked sump question? Has it been established when/where the damage happened?

Yes I have Automotive Plus stickers on my car so my posting in this maybe perceived as bias and defending them, however we the posters/Morlocks lack the facts and are basing our comments on one side of a two/three party story. There is little chance of Automotive Plus commenting on this specific thread so it will be up to the OP to be 'balanced' in their posts.

I think that cracked sump is old. You can see that the faces of the crack aren't clean, plus if it was cracked during transport, there would be oil all over the place.

If anyone did a 1 minute investigation on that engine they would have found that it had water in the filter and a cracked sump prior to selling it. Importing second hand parts and simply selling them on without checking them isn't good enough when you have small community that relies on your service. I expect as a consumer that someone running a performance / specialist shop would have the experience to notify me of any issues or risks prior to purchase.

I'm a bit upset with them at the moment given I specifically asked them to check a secondhand crank before they shipped it to me as I needed it to be undamaged and not ground. When I picked it up from the shipping warehouse I could see through the wrapping that it had spun a bearing, which makes it totally useless to me. I now have to ship it back to get a refund and not only am I out the shipping costs, but I've wasted time, purchased parts based on that item and it's delayed my engine rebuilt.

I'll buy from them again, but I'll be asking for photos of the items first and not relying on the guys there to tell me if an item is damaged or not. MX5 Plus / Automotive Plus, please fix up your QA process. It's not good enough to sell defective secondhand parts.

Hey Guys,

Once again i've contacted my seller about the cracked situation, he was kind enough to give me a replacement for it, so i'm hoping this time there wont be a problem. 'Apparently' my seller did do an inspection on it before delivery or he wouldn't of had sold it to me at all, there is no damage on the pallet and the damage doesn't look fresh at all as it does have old oil markings around it and no leak.

Overall, i am just a tad disappointed that this happened given that automotive plus does have a high reputation for their mx5 services, However, i am glad that they responded to the situation and are giving me a replacement for it without any shipping costs fees.

Thanks for the help on this problem guys! will be back on this as soon as i get the other engine to post a positive/negative feedback review on it.

Update!

So the new engine will be coming in tomorrow for the swap of the cracked milky engine.

The seller sent me photos before confirmation. What you guys think? good or bad?

Can I just point out that the stuff about water being in the oil from the engine being washed is frankly a load of sh*t.

yes, if you pressure wash an engine you cna get water in there (I'm assuming the guys at the docks aren't taking much care to plug lines etc)

BUT, if that was the case, hell even if you submerge the engine fully, the water won't emulsify with the oil like that.


I'd be very confident in saying that the engine has had water in the oil (from head gasket, or whatever) and has been running AFTER that. Be it Automotive Plus starting the engine to test (you'd bloody hope they're checking oil before just cranking the thing over), or that it's blown a head gasket in Japan and just been packed up and sent over.

Regardless, for me to accept that engine it would need to be dirt cheap.

Looks ok... oil looks much better! It's been out in the weather but most the rust and corrosion will clean up fine with a wire brush. You need to check and replace most of the rubber hoses as they will be old and brittle. It's good to see plugs on the openings however part of me doubts they were there when it was shipped so make sure you flush all the coolant passages in the block / head to make sure there is no debris in there before installing it.

You can see the two open ports directly above the filter post, right?
