Where to put P plates on the back of an MX5

Postby snshami » Mon Oct 05, 2015 12:25 am

My son on his green Ps got pulled over by a policewoman because he was not displaying his P plates correctly. His rear P plate was one of those magnetic plates and was on the horizontal part of the quarter panel of his NB. Apparently that was not visible enough.

Anyway she let him off with a warning after placing it for him on the rear most part of the boot lid. Apparently even there was not good enough. Any thoughts on a better location.

Also a strange thing happened while he was waiting. She had taken his license to her car and while he was waiting to get it back he ran his fingers through his hair. He has quite long hair and he was trying to straighten it. While doing so he heard loud beeps from the police car. When he looked back he saw the second policeman frantically gesturing to him not to run his fingers through his hair. Of course my son complied but both both of us are wondering what that was about.

Sticky tape the P plate on the flat section between the licence plate and the brake lights.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

One of these plastic mounts (bolts behind the number late) bend the legs using a heat gun or the hot water method.

The cheapest option i've seen is to just tie something through the hole on the P Plate, like a long string, then just close the boot on it.

As for the hair thing, who knows.
The other day there was a shooting at a Sydney police station by a young bloke, that may have put a few officers on edge perhaps?

Thanks for the link. I bought one.

As for the hair you are right they must be very very jumpy. I cant blame them though. But still why would any baddie store a weapon in their hair.

Playing with your hair interferes with the facial recognition software used by the forward mounted camera in the police car. *Puts tinfoil hat back on and hides*

Or..... It was messing with the photo she was trying to post up on her Facebook page of the 'spunk' she'd just pulled up in a hot little sportscar!.... She wanted advice from her friends as to whether to, ummm, errrrr..... 'arrest' him..... so to speak.....

Yeah well all good hypotheses. Unless someone knows someone who is a police person we are all conjecturing. A colleague at work thought it might have something to do with possible police training about keeping people still and calm and apparently for people who are about to become agitated and violent pulling hair is a first sign of them getting to that state.

Of course given that my son was on his way home from Apollo Bay and was about to hit Skenes Creek Road through Forrest in his newly acquired NB means he would have been on an anticipatory high..

When I had my first NB8B and was on my P's I drilled the number plate to offset it to the side and drilled through the P plate and attached using the screw to the now spacious side of the number plate. When I got off my P plates and my partner still had hers, We used to put it in the rear window when the roof was up, or mount both plates together on the windscreen when the roof was down.

yeah i just punched one of the number plate screws through the plate so it sat on the rear garnish. never had troubles. it's one of those 'another cop wouldn't have thought twice'

I think the rule is visible from 20m away?
maybe someone can confirm?

edit: Vicroads website says must be clearly visible from 20m.

Sorry, haven't seen what state you're in
