Also this password protected tune thing keeps popping up. Does adaptronic do that?

NO!

That must have been a hell of a document :D

Methinks that after several hours the Shannons' guy got to page 56 and realised he was only half way through so simply rubber-stamped it.

Lokiel the adaptronic can still be tuned for emissions as opposed to power, correct? If you remove all the anti pollution 'stuff' it will just be harder to get an emission complaint tune (if at all possible).

I'm very much thinking about going down the euro 5 cat route after talking to an engineer this morning. It will cost little to no more and the potential loss of power, I'm thinking 5-10rwkw, does not concern me. He said there will be no guarantees to pass emission with a high flow 200cpsi cat and you would have to fiddle with the tune to get it across the line which i dont really want to do. I'd prefer to have the car tuned perfectly with a euro 5 cat.
Apparently hjs make a 200 cpsi euro 5 compliant cat but they run about a grand or so. MagnaFlow euro 5 400cpsi cat is about 400. Probably the best option for my purposes unless someone has any other ideas.

I don't believe that the Adaptronic ECU controls ANY of the anti-pollution hardware.
It MAY be possible to get emission control compliance via a specific tune for it (easier with E85) but that's not the tune you'd want to run on the track (or even DD).

I was also under the impression that if your car came with an OBDII port (or CAN bus), it MUST be used used for compliance to verify that you're not throwing any CELs. I believe that only the new Haltech ECU supports the OBDII port (new Megasquirt has it too as an option I think). This is why the Chiptorque re-flash is possibly the best/cheapest solution, the original ECU is still connected to the OBDII port.

I'm sure there are a few x VW technicians that we could ask how to get it tuned to meet emissions :)

Good exhaust design and pedantic tuning can get you great results for performance and emissions, but yes the easiest way is an emissions tune and a pass followed by changing the tune.

The ecu doesnt need a code, simply using security bolts to hold the cover on the ecu (aka factory SE) is fine for most engineers requirements.

Will answer your PM tonight.

Regards getting a refund for insurance - just say you've sold the car. Cheque in the mail.
I wouldn't worry about Engineering (emissions or otherwise). Just get it insured thru Shannons or whoever else says OK to your mods.
I'd only Engineer it if it's had something obviously visible done to it ie. difft engine swap. Swapping turbos, rollbars, computers, are just small things. Anything that prevents you from getting a Roadworthy (or whatever NSW call it) would need Engineering.

I thought he was referring to the password/code that can be used to lock/unlock Haltech tuning maps.
I know that Bob Romano's use this on MINX's tune/Map so he has to go back to them to get it tweaked, he can't take it to any Haltech tuner without them revealing the password.

Thats one method to ensure people dont alter the tune. For engineering the legislation doesnt say "ecu must have a code" it says that the ecu must be tamper proof. A code is a common way, but security bolts are fine for my local engineer.
