Australian new car sale of September (posted by caradvice).
- Sports under $80K (1190, up 8.9 per cent). Led by Toyota 86 (282), BMW 2 Series (245) and Mazda MX-5 (97). Hyundai Veloster just 42, equal to Kia Pro_Cee’d

Comparing to August (posted by caradvice)
Sports Segment Winners:
- Hyundai Veloster (680 – 36.8%), Toyota 86 (241 – 13%), Mazda MX-5 (220 – 17.2%)

In July, the MX5 wasn't in the top 3.

Interestingly the 86 is selling quite strongly after the release of the MX5. Almost 3 to 1 in September. I can presume the high sales of MX5 in August is contributed by dealer's demo.

Will be interesting to see what happens when the 2L is available and also once we are past the silly season.
NA6 turbo - 140kw atw - not the most powerful but so much fun :D

Cant see how you can compare these 3 one is a rice sh*t box the other is a under powered sh*t box with a fixed roof and the 3rd is a convertible. # totally different buyers

Can't you appreciate that people like different cars? The 86 is a great drive and much more practical than the MX5.

MX5 pretty clearly constrained by supply. 86 sales have been declining for some time pretty much in line with what has been seen historically. I'm of the opinion the Veloster is a bit of a different animal as it's really more of a niche hatchback than your classic coupe or roadster.

Just on the veloster.. I would never own a car that had two doors on the left and one door on the right.
That itself is a niche market, yet they appear to sell like hot cakes.

Never really understood the need for a Veloster. Surely, if you had to have a Hyundai, you'd have an i30 for less money, with more power and all the doors?

Felt the same 30 years ago when I never had an XJS but had three XJ6s.

Even so, I'd still buy the 86. I couldn't justify spending new-car money on an ND when its real world use is pretty limited (being a two seater with a tiny boot etc). With the 86, the back seat (small as it is) would sway my purchasing decision.

I'd happily own an ND, but not until second hand ones were cheap.

Hyundai are striving to become one of the top vehicle manufacturers in the world and as such feel the need to field a vehicle in every category.
The Veloster is their budget sports car which they deem will appeal to the most customers, the hot-hatch generation with no kids.

The i30 is just a DD, bland and un-inspiring whereas the turbo Veloster has "some" punch and polarising aesthetics (I don't mind them apart from the almost non-existent rear window).

Do you also question why Mazda produced the following Mazda 3 variants:
1. Standard 2.0L (for the masses)
2. SP23/SP25, 2.3/2.5L (for those who want a bit more punch and sportier handling)
3. MZR, Diesel (for those who drive a lot of KMs and want to save $$$ on fuel)
4. MPS (for those who want to drive fast in a straight line - it's overpowered and torque-steers badly)

I question the MPS variant but suspect that without the RX7/RX8 it was their only high-powered vehicle (too bad we haven't seen a 4WD version yet). For MPS money, there are better performance cars available so I just can't see the need for it.

I would have bought the diesel variant as a DD if I could find one second hand. Either they didn't sell many or people aren't giving them up.

I ended up with a 2007 2.0L Mazda 3 MaxxSport as a DD and it was very practical/reliable/boring. When it was written-off in the Brisbane 2014 November hailstorm I replaced it with a 2005 2.3L Mazda 3 SP23 which is surprisingly a lot more fun to drive but a LOT noisier due to the larger 17" rims and the fact that the first generation BK series have bugger-all noise-damping in the doors and everywhere. The SP23 only uses a bit more fuel but the 2nd-hand "model up" price difference to the 2.0L version wasn't much and definitely worth paying for a car that's more fun to drive (probably not the case when buying the car new).

I agree re supply constraint. Local dealer sold all their ND's, including the one they were trying to keep for rest drives. To solve the problem, Mazda Australia supplied one to them for test drives, which cannot be sold.
