WHINING Walbro High Flow fuel pump

Postby C-Gazer » Sun Oct 04, 2015 11:28 pm

Two years ago I replaced the stock fuel pump with a Walbro High Flow 255 LTS / Hour pump. My NB8B has only done 7000 klm over that time and now once the engine has warmed up the pump produces a loud whine very noticable at idle and low revs. To claify this is not the sound of a normal pump but the sound of a worn motor bearing about to seize. Last night I googled whining Walbro pumps and found pages of complaints and even utube clips of the same whine sound. My plan is to replace the Walbro with a Deatchworks DW200 pump which appears to not have noise problems. Have any other members had similiar whining fuel pumps and are there any other brand pumps I should consider beside Deatschworks?

walbros are known to be a loud pump with out hearing it it's hard to tell but there's probably nothing wrong with it.

Fixed.

The 190lph Walbros don't have the same problems, nor are there a whole lot of fakes on the market like there are with the 255s.

There couldn't be more than a few hundred BP or B6 powered MX5s in the whole world that would need a 255 Walbro (or Deatsch). That is an a$$load of fuel. Almost everyone can get away with a 190. All a 255 will do is overload your FPR and kill it (unless you are running an aftermarket one).

Thanks mb. My other experiences was trying to find a walbro for a 600cc bike engine in an open wheel race car as a cheaper alternative to a Bosch Motorsport pump. we didn't care about noise so got recommended the walbro one.

Good to know the 190 is quiet if I ever need one.
