Sender is on the top right of the gearbox from memory.
As for the cable, the NA used a mechanical cable from the sender
on the NB the speedo sender was electronic and simply had electrical wires leading up.

Re: speedo cable - where is it?
You can only get to it from under the car.
The sensor is sticking out the drivers side of the gearbox.
See here about half way down the page:

If you need to remove it jack the car up really high from the rear and you wont spill any gearbox oil.
Its above the exhaust too so even with the bracing removed its still tight to get too.
Hopefully your issue is the cable was just forgotten to be plugged back in.

Re: speedo cable - where is it?
As above, it's an under car job.
Most likely he's just forgotten to plug it back in, which can be done without removing anyhting from memory.
it's just a spade connector on the back on the sender, so just presses on.
Nearby will also be a pair of bullet connectors for the reverse light switch, might be worth checking they're plugged in too.
edit:
Thinking a bit harder, you should see the plug near the PPF, the wires clip onto the PPF so that if the wires are unplugged it wont hang down and drag on the road.
