NA6 Alternator options

Postby ahnowiknow » Mon Sep 28, 2015 11:00 pm

Hello everyone,

I've decided to provide some input into this fine community.

One night my 1990 NA6 alternator died. The electrician inspected and said the regulator was dead and to rebuild was a bit out of budget so I did research and found the NA6 alternator is the same as the Ford Laser KH of the same vintage. I just brought in my NA6 alternator into the wreckers and they matched up with the Ford Laser one. I suggest calling up your local wrecker asking if they have any Ford Laser's with the Mitisubishi alternators and NOT the Bosche.

The stock NA6 alternator part number: A5T01577 12V 60A
The stock Ford Laser alternator part number: A5TA3177 12V 65A

:Note the extra 5A on the Ford Laser alternator.

Upon inspection, the mounts were all the same.

The notable differences are:
    - Bigger battery terminal bolt
    - Plug location is behind instead of on the side.

Because of the bigger battery terminal bolt, I had to cut the existing battery terminal ring and put a bigger one to accommodate for the bigger bolt which was the probably the hardest part of the whole install.

That's pretty much it. Uninstall, replace with the "new" one and enjoy the extra 5A as well as knowing you don't need to buy a specific NA6 alternator. However, there are other alternators made by Mitsubishi with differing amperage's which I've yet to experience with.

I hope this could be of some help to others out there as I called around asking for quotes on new alternators. $250 for a 60A and $320 for a 65A. I paid $70 for the alternator at a wrecker and it's worked a treat. No dash errors or issues thus far.

Picture attached. Sorry I did not take pics of the install as it's pretty straight forward.

Thanks and happy motoring all.

Be warned. They swapped from internally regulated to ecu control after 94/95. Same as astinas. I'm running the same thing but an 80A version from another variant. It will say IR on the tag. If it doesn't it won't work. I suspect later NBA or possibly na8 will be ecu controlled too.
