This does:

Also, are the ND models called ND5 and NDx (I don't know what digit would be used for 2.0), the way NAs and NBs were called NA6, NA8, NB6, NB8 etc.? Or did this stop at the NC?

True that there are only 1.5s currently available.

True that 2.0s will start to become available at the end of the year, although it seems most of the cars arriving will be pre-ordered.

We always knew we were going to get both engine sizes.

So far everyone seems to be calling them ND 1.5 Roadster/GT or ND 2.0 Roadster/GT etc as appropriate. Maybe someone will eventually invent a different naming convention.
UK since return: Standard NC2 (horrid), C200K, ND2 BBR, NC2 BBR200 (loved it), NC BBR300 (better than BARMY), V-Special, turbo NB8B (my 84th car)

My 1.5L ND VIN starts with JM0ND2EA6. Could be confusing!

What is required is a VIN decoder and guessing is not really going to help. If you check the internet you will find decoders for older models but its unlikely that this info is available yet for Aust. When you call Mazda spare parts they will ask what is the VIN for the car because it provides a reliable piece of information to determine what is which in turn may affect a design level for parts etc. VIN's provide a lot of information. I think its safe to say that the engine size will be identified somewhere on this VIN

Well here's what they worked out for the US VIN codes (there appear to be differences for example from other markets, eg. Euro, Japan, etc.)

J = Japan
M = Mazda
1 = Passenger Car
ND = Carline and series MX-5
A = Restraint System A = Driver, Passenger, side airbags
X, A, B, C, D, E = open Mazda > (B) soft top Sport, (C) soft top Club, (D) soft top GT (also LE)
7 = engine 2.0l
0-9 and X = check digit to validate VIN
G = year 2016
0 = Plant, Hiroshima
next six digits = serial sequence

2016 real examples

soft top club JM1NDAC78G0xxxxxx

soft top GT JM1NDAD72G0xxxxxx

soft top Sport JM1NDAB76G0xxxxxx
"A Convertible has a top you can put down when the weather's nice...... A Roadster has a top you can put up when the weather's bad."
