Slugracer - Its amazing how the rods can bend in two directions. I could get away with rods but do it once do it right, especially as I like to do track days.
Project R - Yes I am lucky. Could of been much worse. Amazing you lost the starter never to be found. Got any pics of the bell housing?

Hmmm. Broke one of mine clean through. Various reciprocating and no-longer-attached-to-anything parts then went out the side of the block and through the sump, including going through and locking up the steering rack. Mid corner. It was interesting.

I recall a very similar occurrence happening to my Dad's Zodiac while we were touring around South Africa when I was a kid. Some rather unpleasant noises were heard under the bonnet before all went silent. We rolled to the side of the road, climbed out and looked back along the road to see a trail of numerous red glowing objects. Looked awesome in the dark to us kids ... however, Dad was not amused ... what followed was a terrifying adventure of being towed about 100k's to the next village by a maniac in a Fiat 124 coupe!!

Re: SE lifter noise
In my rally days did a four day READYPLAN rally in 1978 and one entrant was a certain P Brock in a Gemini which was fitted with a development 2.1 litre engine( read 3.3 Holden six with two pots cut off). Peters car had an Irving alloy head and went well. However the planned production version wasn't so successful as apparently they kept having "electrical problems" with the pistons coming through the block and knocking the alternator off!!
This lead to the Starfire engine being 1.9 ltr(ie cut down 2850 cc) and probably one of the worst engines ever fitted to a new car and compounded by the requirement to have a high local content level which lead to Toyota putting it in its Corona in place of their excellent(18R?) engine. I had one on roadtest and my neighbour thought it was a diesel it was so noisy!!
Had no guts and with a 3 speed auto changed into top under full acceleration at about 90 klph just when you needed a bit of passing power.
Peter.
