What is the best tyre shine?

Howdy,
Over the decades I've used all sorts of tyre products, ranging from 303 (does not last) to silicon (too shiny, greasy as hell).
What is the best tyre shine product which is;
-Not too shiny, a 303 middling shine.
-Actually lasts through rain, etc
-Is not greasy or splatters like silicon
Tell me!

I usually use either 303, or whatever I have for the dashboard.... which is usually 303 anyway.

Alternatively, I have at times scrubbed the tyres with dishwashing liquid, which removes any grease/oil, and old shine.
I found the super clean bare rubber to look pretty nice.



I can 100% tell you to stay away from the Meguiars trim Detailer. It was the most foul sh*t I have ever used on anything.

It's a bastard to get any kind of even coverage with, so it's a lot of work to apply.
Once applied it has a sickly shiny greasy look, I tried it on my soft top.... it looked like I had covered the thing in cooking oil.
It dribbles everywhere, after it was on my top in the slightest warm day, or rain, it would run off the top and down the paint leaving greasy stains.

and worst of all, the sh*t is near impossible to get off.
Wash soap at the carwash and pressure, nope.
Sponges? nope

In the end to get it off the paint I had to wash the car with degreaser, and the top I had to degrease about 4 times scrubbing each time with a brush.

I can't remember the exact product name, having thrown the bottle away in disgust. But it was Meguiars, called Trim Detailer or something, and from memory in a white bottle.

That Meguiars stuff sounds bad. Bob Jane sprayed my tyres with some horrible stuff. Flung onto panels and would not wash off. It took 5 months for it to wear off by itself.

Look at the tyre businesses they all seem to use spray can tyre shines. There are many good tyre shine pressure cans and not expensive - I have a Polyglaze made in Au product and it seems good- not sure of its ingredients you would have to check the website. In the older days we used tyre paint - applied with a paint brush and older detailing processes included scrubbing tyres with a brush and sometimes even finishing with boot polish. The scrub routine is made easier today by hp washers to get rid of muckite. I would not use 303 mainly because its too expensive and not really designed for the point and press convenience of pressure cans and pro tyre changers who don't have the time . No biggy here- tyres all get dirty again and so does the paintwork. Its important that the product does not permanently leave the tyre clean and shiny otherwise sales would fall over a cliff. The boot specialists say don't use silicone on good leather but rather clean you shoes with traditional polish regularly. Its also makes you feel so chuffed when your dull sulking tyre put on a smile with a new application.

I cut a sponge in half and use it as an applicator. Last ages even on a daily with wet roads

Actually 303 is recommended for use in protecting rubber (among other materials) from UV.
But yes, it is somewhat costly compared to many other products.

New tyres often come with a silicone spray on them, this is basically for the non stick properties so that they wont stick together when stacked at the shop, and they stay cleaner.
From memory it's also used to line the moulds at the manufacturer allowing the rubber tyre to be extracted once cured.

If on the cheap then warm soapy water and a cheapo tyre shine can from The Reject Shop/Kmart/BigW etc.
Good for a few weeks.

I've used Simple Green cleaner from Bunnings (best multi purpose cleaner IMO) and that Meguiar's Insane Tyre Shine. Lasts months (pending you're not driving through puddles, dirt, industrial areas etc regularly)
